Croatia - the most popular summer destination among Slovenian residents
In the third quarter of 2023, Croatia was the most popular holiday destination for Slovenian residents. Among foreign tourists in Slovenia, tourists from the EU Member States dominated during the summer holidays.
Leisure time and holidays main reason for private trip
Holidays and leisure time were the reason for 7 out of 10 and visiting relatives or friends for 3 out of 10 private trips of Slovenian residents in July, August and September 2023. During this period, they made 40% of all private trips in 2023.
Dense traffic on Slovenian roads during the holidays
Traffic congestion on Slovenian roads increases significantly during the summer months. This is contributed by both foreign and domestic tourists. The increase in traffic during the holiday months is also confirmed by data on road cross-border traffic of passenger vehicles at Slovenian border crossings with neighbouring countries.
Data on tourism trips confirm that most Slovenian residents travel on private trips by passenger road motor vehicles (88% of private trips in the 3rd quarter of 2023).
Most roaming by domestic mobile phone users in Croatia
Mobile phone roaming statistics also indicate a large tourism seasonality. The majority – around three-quarters – of mobile phone roaming in foreign countries in July 2023 was performed in neighbouring countries, mostly in Croatia.
In the 3rd quarter of 2023, foreign countries were the destination for 58% of all private trips, while Croatia was the destination for two-thirds of all private trips abroad.
Tourists from the EU dominate among foreign tourists in Slovenia during the holiday months
During the summer months – July and August – the highest number of foreign tourist arrivals is usually recorded. July 2023 was the most visited month by foreign tourists since the pandemic – almost 877,000 arrivals were recorded. The largest number of tourist arrivals, 16% of all, were from Germany. Among other foreign tourists, tourists from EU Member States prevailed.
Average travel expenditure on private trips EUR 72 per day
On private trips in the 3rd quarter of 2023, during which Slovenian residents stayed in both rented and free accommodations, they spent on average EUR 72 per day. The most – EUR 125 – was spent by those who stayed in hotels and similar accommodation establishments – EUR 92 in Slovenia and EUR 136 abroad.
Could tourist flows be different during this year's holidays?
This summer is the summer of sports. The Olympic Games in France, the Tour de France, and the European Football Championship in Germany have been included in many people's summer vacation plans. Will this also affect established summer tourist flows? Will Slovenians travel more to France and Germany because of their athletes?
According to the latest available Eurostat data for 2023, there were almost 133,000 tourist arrivals from Slovenia to Germany and just over 61,000 to France.
