Consumer price indices, June 2024
Consumer prices up by 1.5% annually and by 0.4% monthly
The largest impact on the annual inflation came from higher prices in restaurants and hotels (by 6.7%). Monthly inflation was mainly due to higher prices of package holidays (by 11.2%). In the first half of the year, prices went up by 2.3%.
Lowest annual inflation in the last three years
In June, annual inflation stood at 1.5%. In the same period last year, it was 6.9%. This is the lowest price growth since June 2021, when annual inflation stood at 1.4%.
In one year, service and goods prices increased on average by 4.2% and 0.2%, respectively. Semi-durable goods prices went up by 1.5%, and non-durable goods prices by 0.3%, while durable goods prices dropped by 1.4%.
The largest upward impact on the annual inflation came from higher prices of services in restaurants and hotels, which increased by 6.7% and contributed 0.5 of a percentage point (p.p.), followed by higher prices in the group miscellaneous goods and services (by 4.9%), which contributed 0.4 p.p.
On the other hand, the inflation was pushed down by 7.7% lower prices of electricity, gas and other fuels, which lowered the annual inflation by 0.6 p.p.
In the first half of the year, prices up in almost all main groups
From January to the end of June, the prices in the group recreation and culture went up the most (by 7.3%), followed by higher prices in the groups clothing and footwear (by 4.2%), restaurants and hotels (by 4.0%), alcoholic beverages and tobacco (3.4%), health (by 2.9%) and miscellaneous goods and services (by 2.4%).
The only main group in which prices fell was furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance. Products and services in this group were on average cheaper by 0.3%.
June inflation mainly due to higher prices of package holidays
Compared to the previous month, consumer prices increased by 0.4%.
The price of package holidays increased by 11.2%, which pushed monthly inflation up by 0.4 p.p. Additionally, 0.1 p.p. were added each by higher prices of accommodation services (by 3.6%) and insurance (by 2.1%). All other price increases in June added additional 0.2 p.p.
Lower prices of motor fuels eased monthly inflation by 0.2 p.p (petrol prices decreased by 4.6% and diesel prices by 3.1%), and lower prices of electricity, gas and other fuels (by 1.1%) and of clothing (also by 1.1%) each by 0.1 p.p.
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this June the annual growth of consumer prices was 1.6% (in June 2023 it was 6.6%). Prices at the monthly level on average remained the same.
On average, service prices went up by 4.7%, while goods prices went down by 0.1%. Semi-durable goods prices increased by 0.6% and non-durable goods prices by 0.2%, while durable goods prices decreased by 2.0%.
Annual inflation rates in May 2024 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in May the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.6% (a month before 2.4%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.7% (a month before 2.6%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Latvia (0.0%) and the highest in Romania (5.8%); in Slovenia it stood at 2.5%.
