Consumer price indices, May 2024
Annual inflation at 2.5%, monthly at 0.5%
In one year, consumer prices were on average higher by 2.5%. Service prices went up by 4.3% and goods prices by 1.6%.
Annual price growth half a percentage point lower than in the previous month
Price growth at the annual level decreased to 2.5% in May. In the previous month it was 3.0% and in the same month last year 8.4%.
In one year, service prices increased on average by 4.3% and goods prices by 1.6%. As regards goods, non-durable and semi-durable goods prices went up by 2.3% and 1.7%, respectively, while durable goods prices went down by 0.9%.
The annual growth rate was pushed up the most (by 0.5 of a percentage point) by 6.8% higher prices in restaurants and hotels. Higher prices in the group housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (by 3.1%) contributed 0.4 p.p.
0.3 p.p. each was contributed by higher prices of products and services in the groups health (by 5.5%), miscellaneous goods and services (by 4.6%) and recreation and culture (by 2.9%). Another 0.2 p.p. each was added by higher prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco (by 4.2%) and of products and services in the group transportation (by 1.4%).
At the monthly level, prices on average half a percent higher
In May, consumer prices were on average 0.5% higher than a month before.
The biggest impact on the monthly inflation, 0.2 of a percentage point, came from 4.0% higher prices of package holidays. Additional 0.1 p.p. each was added by higher prices of fruit (by 7.2%) and women’s garments (by 2.9%). All other price increases in May contributed another 0.2 of a percentage point.
The monthly inflation was eased by 0.1 p.p. by 2.1% cheaper diesel.
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this May the annual growth of consumer prices was 2.5% (in May 2023: 8.1%). The monthly price growth stood at 0.4%.
In one year, service prices went up on average by 4.8% and goods prices by 1.3%. Non-durable goods prices went up by 2.2% and semi-durable goods prices by 0.8%, while durable goods prices went down by 1.9%.

Annual inflation rates in April 2024 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in April the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 2.4% (the same as a month before). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.6% (the same as a month before). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Lithuania (0.4%) and the highest in Romania (6.2%); in Slovenia it stood at 3.0%.
