Acknowledgment and ascertainment of paternity and adoptions of children, 2023
4% of children acknowledged by their fathers after they completed one month
In 2023, 8,930 acknowledgments and 33 ascertainments of paternity were registered as well as 34 adoptions, 13 of which from abroad.
Share of paternity acknowledgments highest so far with 85%
8,930 acknowledgments of paternity were registered in Slovenia last year (727 or 8% fewer than a year before). In 85% of cases, children were acknowledged before birth. This is one percentage point more than in 2022 and the highest percentage so far. In the first month after birth, additional 10% of acknowledgments were registered. For 99% of children the acknowledgment of paternity was given before their first birthday. 123 (1%) children were older than one year; the oldest were aged 40 years or more.
Fathers who acknowledged paternity were on average 33.9 years old; 28 of them were aged 60 years or more. Those fathers who acknowledged paternity before birth were slightly younger (33.7 years).
Paternity was ascertained for 33 children.
38% of adoptions from abroad, the most from Sierra Leone
34 adoptions were recorded in Slovenia last year. Before adoption, 21 children lived in Slovenia, while 13 children were adopted from abroad and they had lived in six foreign countries (the most, 8, in Sierra Leone).
In 18 of 34 cases, the child got new parents. In 16 cases the child was adopted by a spouse/partner of the child’s biological parent.
