Waste treatment infrastructure, 2022
863 waste recovery and disposal facilities operated in Slovenia
There were 270 facilities for waste recycling, 577 facilities for backfilling and 13 facilities for energy recovery in Slovenia in 2022. In addition, waste was disposed of in three incineration plants and landfilled at 17 landfill sites.
Two thirds of all waste treatment facilities intendent for backfilling
In 2022, 270 waste recycling facilities operated in Slovenia, in which 24% of total waste generated in or imported to Slovenia was recovered. Just over 3 million tonnes of waste was recycled, which is 6% less than in the 2020.
In 577 facilities for waste recovery with backfilling, 7.9 million tonnes of waste was recovered, of which 96% was construction and demolition waste. Compared to 2020, in 2022 the amount of backfilled waste increased by 133%.
In 13 facilities for waste incineration for the purpose of energy recovery, 134,000 tonnes of waste was utilized for energy, which is slightly more than one percent of total waste generated in and imported to Slovenia and 30% less than in 2020. In three facilities for waste incineration for the purpose of waste disposal, 37,000 tonnes of waste was removed, which was almost the same as in 2020.
The number of facilities for waste recovery with backfilling increased almost by half between 2020 and 2022, while the number of recycling facilities decreased by 40%. This is the result of classifying mobile treatment facilities in which the recovery of construction and demolition waste is completed by putting the recovered waste into or on the ground among waste recovery facilities with backfilling.
Most disposed waste ended in non-hazardous waste landfills
In 2022, 17 landfill sites were operating in Slovenia, of which 13 for non-hazardous waste, three for inert waste and one for hazardous waste. Eleven landfill sites were located in Vzhodna Slovenija and six in Zahodna Slovenija. 163,000 tonnes of waste were disposed of on landfill sites. The vast majority of disposed waste (98%) was disposed on non-hazardous waste landfill sites, almost 2% on the hazardous waste landfill site, and less than one percent on inert waste landfill sites.
Compared to 2020, less waste was disposed on all three types of landfills: by 4% on non-hazardous waste landfills, by 28% on hazardous waste landfills and by 99% on inert waste landfills. A significant decrease in the amount of waste disposed on inert waste landfills is the result of waste no longer being disposed on one of the landfills for this waste.
