Highest recorded number of persons in employment

In March, the number of persons in employment increased by 0.3%, reaching the highest value since we started monitoring register data. Compared to the previous month, the number of persons in employment who are foreign citizens increased by 1.1%.

Key statistics on persons in employment:

  • the total number up by around 2.700 in March;
  • growth in 15 sections of activities, in construction by 1.2%;

More persons in paid employment as well as self-employed persons

In March, there were about 944,300 persons in employment, which is the highest value since we started monitoring register data. On a monthly basis, their number increased by just under 2,700 or 0.3%. There were just over 842,300 employees and just under 102,000 self-employed persons. The number of employees increased by about 2,300 persons or 0.3% compared to the previous month, while the number of self-employed persons increased by just over 300 or 0.3%.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of persons in employment increased by 1.4%. The number of employees went up by 1.2%, and the number of self-employed persons by 2.6%.

More men and women in employment

The number of men in employment increased by just under 1,700 or 0.3% in March to around 522,100. The number of women in employment also grew, by just under 1,000 or 0.2% to around 422,200.

Compared to last March, the number of men in employment went up by 1.9%, and the number of women by 0.9%.

Growth in most sections of activities, the highest in construction

On a monthly basis, the number of persons in employment increased in 15 sections of activities and decreased in five. The largest growth was recorded in construction, by around 900 persons or 1.2%. More than half of these were foreign men in employment. The largest decrease in the number of persons in employment was recorded in real estate activities, by around 40 persons or 0.9%.

On an annual basis, the number of persons in employment went up in construction (by 6.4%) and in real estate activities (by 6.3%).

The number of foreign citizens in employment continues to increase

The number of foreign persons in employment (excluding farmers) increased by 1.1% on a monthly basis to about 144,200 persons. Foreign citizens represented 15.6% of persons in employment (excluding farmers) and came from 150 different countries. Around 19,100 were citizens of EU member states, while just over 125,100 were citizens of other countries. Nearly half of foreign persons in employment were from Bosnia and Herzegovina (just over 70,600), followed by citizens of Kosovo (around 16,600), Serbia (just over 15,900), Croatia (just under 11,100), and North Macedonia (about 9,400).

Compared to March last year, the number of foreign persons in employment went up by 11.4%.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
As of January 2024, posted workers are included in persons in employment. As of 1 January 2024, the separate insurance basis for this category of insured persons was terminated, and they are now registered for compulsory social insurance in the same manner as other employees. As of January 2024, caregivers of family members are also included in persons in employment.
