Number of persons in employment down in most sections of activities

At the monthly level, the number of persons in employment decreased slightly, by about 2,300, with a larger decrease among women. Both the number of employees and self-employed decreased. In December, more than half of the persons in employment had completed upper secondary education.

Updated definition of persons in employment

Until the end of the previous year, persons in employment were monitored on a territorial basis, meaning persons working within the territory of Slovenia were included. In December, there were just over 6,900 posted workers (i.e., individuals sent to work or undergo training abroad) recorded. These persons will gradually transition, most likely becoming part of persons in paid employment as their existing insurance basis expires (as of January 2024, there were just under 4,600 posted workers remaining).

Starting in January 2024, caregivers of family members (just under 200) are also included among the persons in employmment, specifically categorized among own-account workers.

Slightly fewer persons in employment 

Compared to December, the number of persons in employment decreased by around 2,300 or 0.2%, to approximately 939,000. The number of employees decreased by just over 2,100 (0.3%), and the number of self-employed persons by around 200 (0.2%).

At the monthly level, the decrease in the number of employed women was more noticeable (by just under 1,800 or 0.4%), while the number of employed men decreased by around 500 or 0.1%.

A monthly comparison by age groups shows that the number of persons in employment decreased most significantly in the age group 60+, by around 1,800 or 2.9%, which is probably attributable to retirement.

Compared to the same period last year, the number of persons in employment increased by 1.3%. There were 1.1% more employees and 2.8% more self-employed. There were more men and women in employment; the number of the former went up by 1.7% and of the latter by 0.8%.

Decrease in most activities, largest growth in construction

Compared to the previous month, the number of persons in employment increased in three sections of activities, most notably in construction, by around 700 or 0.9%. In 17 sections, the number of persons in employment decreased, most significantly in agriculture, forestry and fishing, by just under 700 or 2.7%.

Compared to January of the previous year, the number of persons in employment in construction increased by 5.6%, while in agriculture, forestry and fishing it decreased by 2.7%.

Starting in January 2024, data on persons in employment in tourism according to the UNWTO and OECD methodologies will be published at the level of cohesion and statistical regions. According to the UNWTO methodology, there were slightly fewer than 58,300 persons in employment in tourism, with the most, around 19,400, in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region. According to the OECD methodology, there were around 69,000 persons in employment in tourism, with the most, almost 24,400, in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region.

More enterprises employing persons with disabilities, more persons in employment with disabilities

At the end of 2023, there were 159 registered enterprises employing persons with disabilities with at least one employed person, and their number has been increasing since 2018. In total, approximately 11,300 persons were employed in these enterprises, around 300 (2.8%) fewer than in the previous year.

The number of persons in employment with disabilities slightly increased in December 2023 compared to December 2022, by just under 300 or 0.7%, to approximately 35,800. Their number increased most significantly in construction, by almost 100 persons or 5.0%. In manufacturing, the number of persons in employment with disabilities decreased the most, by just under 200 or 1.5%.

More persons in employment with completed tertiary education

In December 2023, more than half of the persons in employment (54.2%) had completed upper secondary education, 36.5% had completed tertiary education, and 9.3% had completed basic education or less. 

The number of persons in employment with completed tertiary education increased compared to December 2022 by about 6,900 or 2.1%. The number of persons in employment with basic education or less increased by about 1,200 or 1.4%. On the other hand, the number of persons in employment with completed upper secondary education decreased by almost 2,200 or 0.4%.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
As of 1 January 2024, the separate insurance basis for this category of insured persons was terminated (insurance basis 002), and they are now registered for compulsory social insurance in the same manner as other employees. In line with this, the definition of persons in employment has also been amended.

As of January 2024, caregivers of family members are also included in persons in employment.
