Fewer live births than deaths in all months of 2023
According to provisional data for December 2023, 4% fewer children were born and 5% fewer people died than a year before. In all months of 2023 natural decrase was recorded.
Fewer live births
In the final month of last year, 1,313 children were born in Slovenia, which was 54 or 4% fewer than in December 2022. On average 42 children were born per day (compared to 44 in the same month of 2022).
About 16,800 children were born from January to December 2023, which was 5% fewer than in the previous year. Due to late administrative processing of some births, the final number of births is expected to be somewhat higher.
Fewer deaths
In the observed month, 2,135 residents of Slovenia died. This was 120 (5%) fewer than in December 2022 and 164 (7%) fewer than in December 2021. On average 69 people died each day (73 in December 2022 and 74 in the same month of 2021).
According to provisional data for 2023, slightly more than 21,400 people died, which is 5% fewer than a year before and 8% fewer than in 2021.
What do data for January 2024 indicate?
According to the first estimate, 1,351 residents of Slovenia died between 1 and 21 January 2024. In the same period of last year, this number was higher (1,553 residents).
