The value of external trade in goods in December lower, in 2023 higher than a year before
In 2023, exports went slightly up, while imports remained about the same. Trade with EU non-member countries increased, while with EU Member States it decreased. A third of the value of exports were medicinal and pharmaceutical products. Trade with energy products and raw materials decreased.

Value of trade in December lower than monthly averages of exports and imports, a surplus generated in external trade in goods
Characteristically for the season, both the values of exports and imports in December were lower than the average monthly values in the reference year (exports 85.3% of the average, imports 81.0%).
In the observed month, the export-import ratio was 101.5%. A surplus of EUR 57.6 million was generated.
Exports and imports slightly up, 3rd quarter down at the annual level
Last year’s exports were 4.4% and imports 0.6% higher than a year ago. A trade deficit was generated in the amount of EUR 2.1 billion. The export-import ratio was 96.4%.
In the 1st quarter, external trade was still up, but in the 2nd the value of trade went down compared to the same period of 2022. The 3rd quarter was worse particularly on the side of exports, which were down by 10.0% at the annual level. Imports were down by 3.2%. In the last quarter, exports grew again (by 5.8%), while imports decreased less than in the previous two quarters (by 1.3%). The value of exports fluctuated between months and quarters, while the value of imports was steady.

The value of imports of organic chemicals grew the most, the value of trade with energy products and raw materials decreased
As regards exports, the most important group of products (according to the Standard International Trade Classification – SITC) was medicinal and pharmaceutical products as their value was about a third (34.0%) of total value of exports. They were followed by products from the groups road vehicles (8.4%), electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances (6.7%), general industrial machinery and equipment (4.1%) and petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (3.7%).
For imports, organic chemicals (19.0% of total imports) was the most important group of products; their value doubled compared to a year earlier. They were followed by products form the groups medicinal and pharmaceutical (14.3%), road vehicles (8.0%), petroleum, petroleum products and related materials (6.1%) and electrical machinery, apparatus and appliances (5.2%).
Compared to 2022, it is also worth mentioning the decrease in the value of trade with energy products and raw materials as the groups of products with largest decreases were petroleum, petroleum products and related materials, electricity, iron and steel and non-ferrous metals. The decrease in the value of trade was affected by lower prices of these products on the global markets, which is also evident from the trends of import price indices.
Highest growth in exports to Switzerland and imports from China
Slovenia’s most important export markets were Switzerland, Germany, Italy, Croatia and Austria. Slovenia imported the most in terms of value from Switzerland, China, Germany, Italy and Austria.
Compared to the previous year, exports to Switzerland and imports from China grew the most, while the value of imports from the Russian Federation had the largest decrease, by more than 85%.

- From EU Member States down by 14.7% and in trade with EU non-member countries by 16.9%; without operations involving processing, imports from the latter down by 32.1% (it amounted to EUR 646 million).
