A fifth of all overnight stays in festive Ljubljana
In tourist accommodation establishments, 329,000 arrivals and 795,000 overnight stays were recorded, the largest number in municipality Ljubljana. The number of overnight stays - both domestic and foreign - was higher than a year ago. Tourists from Italy generated the most foreign overnight stays.
Domestic tourists spent the largest number of nights in municipality Kranjska Gora and foreign in Ljubljana
Domestic tourists generated 38% of all overnight stays. They generated 113,000 arrivals and 302,000 overnight stays, 1% more than in December 2022. They spent the largest number of nights in municipalities Kranjska Gora, Piran and Podčetrtek. In municipality Kranjska Gora, more than a tenth of all domestic overnight stays in this municipality in 2023 were recorded in December.
Foreign tourists generated 216,000 arrivals and almost 493,000 overnight stays, 14% more than in December 2022. They spent the largest number of nights in municipalities Ljubljana, Bled and Kranjska Gora. In Ljubljana, they generated 30% of all their overnight stays in December.
A quarter of all foreign tourists from Italy
The largest share of foreign overnight stays was generated by tourists from Italy (26% or 125,600 overnight stays), the most in municipality Ljubljana. In December, they generated 17% of all of their overnight stays in the capital in 2023. Compared to December 2022, they generated 14% more overnight stays. Tourists from Croatia generated 69,100 overnight stays or 38% more than a year ago. They were followed by tourists from Austria, Germany, Serbia, and Hungary.
Health (spa) resorts the most visited
As regards the types of municipalities, the largest share of tourist overnight stays was recorded in health (spa) resorts (30%), the most in municipality Brežice. They were followed by mountain resorts (23%), Ljubljana (21%) and seaside resorts (12%). Compared to the previous December, the number of overnight stays increased the most in Ljubljana (by 18%) and seaside resorts (by 14%).
The capital is especially attractive for domestic tourists during the December holiday season. The highest number of domestic arrivals and overnight stays in the capital in 2023 was recorded in December.
Hotels are still the most popular
Tourists still generated most overnight stays in hotels (448,700 or 61% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (20%) and camping sites (4%).
Compared to the previous December, the number of overnight stays among the mentioned accommodation establishments increased the most in private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (by 15%), followed by camping sites (by 10%) and hotels (by 8%).
In 2023 the largest number overnight stays so far
In 2023, almost 6.2 million tourist arrivals and more than 16.1 million overnight stays were recorded in Slovenia, which was 4% more than a year ago. The year 2023 was the most successful year in terms of tourism, with 2% more overnight stays than in 2019, the previous record year for tourism.
Domestic tourists generated almost 4.6 million or 28% and foreign over 11.5 million or 72% overnight stays. While domestic tourists generated 17% fewer overnight stays than year before, foreign generated 15% more. Compared to 2019, the number of domestic overnight stays increased by 4% and of foreign by 2%.
In 2023, the largest number of tourists came from Germany (1.9 million or 16% of all foreign overnight stays). They were followed by tourists from Italy, Austria, Czechia, the Netherlands and Croatia. Compared to 2022, 27% more Croatian tourists, 18% more Italian tourists, 16% more Czech tourists and 11% more Austrian tourists were recorded.
