At least one foreign language is understood by 96% of adults in Slovenia
The vast majority of adults in Slovenia aged 18–69 understand at least one foreign language. The most common foreign language is English, followed by Croatian and German. For 84% of adults, the mother tongue is Slovenian.

Since 2001, we have celebrated the European Day of Languages at the end of September. Its aim is to increase people’s awareness of the importance of language learning, to increase awareness of and respect for all languages spoken by different nations in Europe, to remind people of language diversity in Europe, to raise language awareness and promote language heritage of Europe, and to encourage people to learn foreign languages.
A quarter of adults in Slovenia understand at least five foreign languages
Among adults in Slovenia, as many as 96% understand or use at least one foreign language. The share of adults who understand or speak at least one foreign language is the lowest among those with completed basic education or less, and the highest among those with completed tertiary education. As regards sex, 97% of adult men and 94% of adult women understand or use at least one foreign language.
Among those who understand or use one or more foreign languages, 46% or almost half have an above-average knowledge of at least one foreign language, which they use flexibly and almost flawlessly, while 37% have an average knowledge of at least one foreign language they use relatively fluently.
18% of all adults understand or use one foreign language, 23% two foreign languages, 19% three foreign languages, 11% four foreign languages and 25% five foreign languages or more.
The most common foreign language is English
Among all foreign languages that adults understand or use, English is the most commonly understood. It is understood or used by 74% of all adults, and over half of them, 56%, have the best command of English among all foreign languages.
The second most common foreign language among adults is Croatian, followed by German. The fourth most common language is Serbo-Croatian, followed by Bosnian, Serbian and Italian.
Among English-speaking adults, 6% have basic education or less, 54% have upper secondary education, and 40% have tertiary education. There is a very similar distribution among German-speaking adults. Among adults with knowledge of Croatian, 11% have basic education or less, 57% have upper secondary education and 32% have tertiary education. Among adults with knowledge of Serbo-Croatian, 15% have basic education or less, 72% have upper secondary education and 13% have tertiary education.
5% of adults have two mother tongues
The mother tongue is the language that people learn first in early childhood and is for them the easiest to express in. It is generally used at home and is mostly the language of the parents. For 16% of adults, the mother tongue is not Slovenian, but most often Bosnian, Serbian, Croatian or Albanian. Among all adults, 5% have two mother tongues, 54% of them men and 46% women.
