Newly observed service activities

With the new European legislation on business statistics, the range of observed activities has expanded. In the field of service activities, from 2021 on, financial and insurance (K), education (P), human health and social work activities (Q), art, entertainment and recreation activities (R), and other personal service activities (S96) also began to be monitored.

Out of 185,664 active enterprises operating in Slovenia in 2021, 7,748 or 4.2% were foreign affiliates.

In the fields of education, human health and social work activities, art, entertainment and recreation activities, foreign control is not typical

In newly observed service activities (P, Q, R and S96), the share of foreign inward affiliates among all enterprises in these activities was less than one percent. In these activities, companies are predominantly under domestic control, with the exception of financial and insurance activities (K), where 6.7% of companies were under foreign control.

According to the size class measured by the number of employees and self-employed persons, the majority of the newly observed service activities (P, Q, R, S96) would belong to micro (0–9 persons) or small enterprises (10–49 persons). Their total economic contribution also did not significantly affect the final values of foreign inward affiliates.

The share and economic importance of foreign affiliates in all observed residential enterprises in Slovenia increases with enterprise size

Observing the enterprises by size classes, measured by the number of employees and self-employed persons, reveals that in 2021 the share of micro foreign affiliates (up to 9 persons) in all micro enterprises in Slovenia was 3.6%, while the share of large foreign affiliates (250 or more persons) in all large enterprises in Slovenia was 47.6%.

In the total number of foreign affiliates, micro foreign affiliates dominate. Despite their abundance, they do not contribute significantly to employment, turnover, valued added or investments of all foreign affiliates. In 2021, 6,361 or 82.1% of foreign affiliates were micro enterprises, which generated 7.4% of value added of all foreign affiliates. On the other hand, among all foreign affiliates only 128 or 1.7% were large enterprises, which generated 57.2% of value added of all foreign affiliates.

More than a quarter of total value added generated by foreign inward affiliates

Foreign inward affiliates are economically very important despite their low number. They generated more than a quarter (27.3%) of total value added in Slovenia in 2021. They employed more than a quarter (26.9%) of all employees, generated more than a quarter (27.4%) of investments and a third (32.9%) of total turnover in Slovenia.

Economically most important foreign affiliates controlled by Germany, Austria and Switzerland

Almost half of the foreign inward affiliates in Slovenia were under the control of Italy, Serbia, Russian Federation, Austria, and Croatia.

Enterprises that were economically the most important, as they generated the most value added, were under the control of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. From the point of view of employees, in addition to the aforementioned, there were also enterprises controlled by Croatia and France.
