Lower production of drinking milk, cream and milk powder
In April, 2.5% less milk was collected from agricultural holdings than a year ago. Drinking milk production again decreased by over 2,000 tonnes. Compared to March 2023, dairies decreased the production of all groups of milk products except cheese.
Quantity of collected milk still lower than a year ago
Around 49,400 tonnes of cows’ milk was collected from agricultural holdings, which is 2.5% less than in April 2022 and 2% less than in the previous month.
At the monthly level decrease in the production of most milk products
In comparison with the previous month, Slovenian dairies produced almost two-thirds less milk powder. Butter production was lower by more than 9%, and cream production by more than 7%. The production of drinking milk and of fermented milk products was lower by almost 5%. Only the production of cheese increased (by more than 3%).
At the annual level, the production of drinking milk and cream decreased the most
Compared to April 2022, dairies produced around 62% less milk powder. The production of drinking milk decreased by more than 2,000 tonnes (or 14%) and of cream by more than 100 tonnes (or more than 11%). However, the production of fermented dairy products and butter increased (by almost 3% and by almost 1%, respectively).
In the first four months of the year, lower production of milk products, except acidified milk
In the first four months, Slovenian dairies produced almost 2% more acidified milk products (265 tonnes more). The production of other groups of dairy products decreased: dairies produced more than 6,400 tonnes less drinking milk, almost 380 tonnes less cream and almost 330 tonnes less cheese.
More cows’ milk collected in the EU in March

Dairies in the EU collected 0.7% more cows’ milk in the first three months of 2023 and increased the production of butter by 3%, of cream by more than 2% and of drinking milk and cheese by less than 1%. Average price of raw milk in the EU substantially decreased for the third month in a row and in March 2023 amounted to EUR 0.504 per kg. Raw milk price is expected to decrease also in April 2023.
