Students who completed basic and upper-secondary education, school year 2021/2022

40% of students completed their education via a general matura, 39% via a vocational one and 21% via a final exam

In the school year 2021/22, 20,084 participants successfully completed basic education and 19,311 upper secondary education.

19,946 pupils and 138 adults successfully completed basic education

In the school year 2021/22, basic education was successfully completed by 19,946 pupils, which is almost 4% more than a year earlier. 19,627 pupils completed basic school program according to the regular program, and 319 according to the adapted program. The number of basic school pupils has been growing again in recent years, so the generations leaving basic schools are also larger. The generation of children who completed basic education in the school year 2017/18 was the smallest in independent Slovenia (17,116).

The basic school program for adults was completed by 138 participants (in 2020/21: 158).


17,163 students and 2,148 adults successfully completed upper secondary education

In the school year 2021/22, upper secondary education was successfully completed by 17,163 students, 4% fewer than in the previous year. 40% of students completed their education with a general matura, 39% with a vocational matura, and 21% with a final exam.

5,741 students completed upper secondary general programmes: 5,648 students completed general and professional gymnasiums, and 93 students completed the matura course. 7,856 students completed technical programmes: 6,479 students completed technical programmes, 1,323 vocational technical programmes, and 54 vocational courses. 3,207 students obtained vocational education and 359 short-term vocational education.

As in previous years, the largest share of students completed programmes in the fields of Generic programmes and qualifications (33%) and Engineering, production technologies and construction (28%).


In addition, 2,148 adults completed upper secondary education. 8% obtained general education, 30% vocational education and 62% finished technical programmes. Most of these students received their education in the fields of Engineering, manufacturing and construction, and Business and administration.
