Livestock slaughter in slaughterhouses, March 2023
More meat gained than in the previous month
About 3,802,000 poultry, 18,000 pigs and 11,000 cattle were slaughtered in Slovene slaughterhouses in March 2023. In this way, about 6,500 tonnes of poultry meat, 1,700 tonnes of pig meat, and 3,100 tonnes of bovine meat was gained.
More animals slaughtered than in the previous month
Compared to the previous month, the slaughter of sheep went up by about 180% (about 1,000 animals), of cattle by about 24% (about 2,000 animals), of horses by about 20% (about 10 animals), of poultry by about 18% (about 573,000 animals) and of pigs by about 15% (about 2,000 animals).
The total carcass weight of slaughtered sheep went up by about 143% (about 11 tonnes), of cattle by about 24% (about 603 tonnes), of pigs by about 14% (about 218 tonnes), of horses by about 12% (about 2 tonnes), and of poultry by about 8% (about 488 tonnes).

More sheep and poultry, and fewer all other species of animals slaughtered than a year ago
At the annual level, the slaughter of sheep went up by about 88% and of poultry by about 6%. On the other hand, the number of slaughtered pigs went down by about 13%, of horses by about 7% and of cattle by about 5%.
The total carcass weight of slaughtered sheep went up by about 71%, of poultry was about the same as in March last year, but with a positive trend, while the total carcass weight of pigs went down by about 15%, of horses by about 10% and of cattle by about 6%.
In March 2023, we recorded slaughter of 9 cattle imported from Croatia and Italy. The total weight of dressed carcass was about 2 tonnes. There was no record of slaughter of imported pigs or poultry in Slovene slaughterhouses.
