Tourist arrivals and overnight stays, February 2023
Domestic tourists stayed mostly in health (spa) resorts and foreign in mountain resorts
In February, tourist accommodation establishments recorded 282,000 tourist arrivals and 792,000 overnight stays, which is 14% more than a year ago. They spent most nights in municipality Kranjska Gora, the only one with over 100,000 overnight stays, followed by Ljubljana, Bohinj and Piran.
Slightly fewer overnight stays than before the epidemic
Domestic tourists generated 46% of all overnight stays, the most in municipalities Kranjska Gora, Piran and Zreče. Tourist accommodation establishments recorded 119,000 of their arrivals and slightly more than 366,000 of their overnight stays, which is 11% fewer than a year ago and 5% fewer than in February 2020.
Foreign tourists generated more than 163,000 arrivals and about 426,000 overnight stays, which is 5.5% fewer than three years ago and 48% more than a year ago. The largest number of foreign tourist overnight stays was recorded in municipality Ljubljana, followed by Kranjska Gora and Maribor.
The most foreign tourists from Croatia
Tourists from Croatia generated the largest share of foreign overnight stays (almost 94,700 or 22% of all foreign overnight stays). They spent the most nights in municipality Kranjska Gora. They were followed by tourists from Italy (11%), Austria and Serbia (10% each) and Hungary (6%).
Zreče among the most visited municipalities
As regards the types of municipalities, the largest share of tourist overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts (34%), the most in municipality Kranjska Gora. They were followed by health (spa) resorts (30%), Ljubljana (12%) and seaside municipalities (9%).
Zreče was fifth among all municipalities according to the share of overnight stays and third according to domestic tourist overnight stays.
More than half of all overnight stays in hotels
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (425,600 or 54% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations, rented rooms and dwellings (22%).
In the first two months the most tourists from Croatia
From the beginning of January to the end of February 2023, 559,000 tourist arrivals and almost 1.6 million overnight stays were recorded in Slovenia, which is 25% more than in the same period a year ago.
While domestic tourists generated 3% fewer overnight stays in this period, foreign generated 58% more. Tourists from Croatia generated almost a quarter of all foreign overnight stays.
