Significantly more foreign tourist overnight stays

Last year 5.9 million tourist arrivals and 15.6 million overnight stays were recorded in tourist accommodation establishments, which is almost 40% more than a year before and 1% fewer than in 2019. At the peak of the season in August, a record number of overnight stays was recorded, over 3 million.

Tourism close to its pre-epidemic level

Last year's tourist season was marked by the return of foreign tourists. The ratio between domestic and foreign tourists returned to the pre-epidemic levels.

Foreign tourists generated 3.9 million arrivals and 10.1 million overnight stays, which was twice as many as the year before and a tenth fewer than in 2019. Their overnight stays, most of which were generated in the second half of the year, represented two thirds of the total.

Domestic tourist generated 1.9 million arrivals and a third of all overnight stays or 5.5 million. Compared to the previous year, the number was 15% lower. Compared to 2019, it was up by a quarter.

Tourists from Germany generated more than 1.5 million overnight stays

The largest number of overnight stays were made by tourists from Germany, 1.8 million or 18% of all foreign overnight stays. They generated the most stays in municipality Ljubljana. Compared to 2019, tourists from Germany generated 18% more overnight stays.

They were followed by tourists from Italy, who generated 916,000 overnight stays or 9% of all; they also spent the most nights in Ljubljana. Compared to 2019, they generated 28% fewer overnight stays.

In third place were tourists from Austria with 885,000 overnight stays. They mostly spent the nights in municipality Piran. They generated 10% fewer overnight stays than in 2019.

In the spring months, tourists from other continents started to return. However, on an annual basis there are still significantly fewer overnight stays by those tourists than before the epidemic.

Ljubljana again the most visited municipality

As regards the types of municipalities, almost a third of overnight stays were recorded in mountain resorts, almost 4.9 million. They were followed by health (spa) and seaside resorts (20% each), Ljubljana (13%), other (10%) and urban municipalities (6%).

With the return of foreign tourists, tourism started to recover in Ljubljana, which was also the most visited municipality overall. It was among the municipalities that recorded the greatest growth in overnight stays, as more than twice as many overnight stays were recorded than the year before, but one tenth fewer than in 2019. Second placed was municipality Piran, which was the most visited during the epidemic. 18% more overnight stays were recorded there than the year before, followed by the municipalities of Bled, Kranjska Gora, Bohinj and Brežice.

The largest share of overnight stays in hotels

Tourists spent almost 6.6 million overnight stays in hotels or 42% of the total. They were followed by private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings  (23%) and camping sites (15%).

Compared to the previous year, growth was recorded in all types of accommodation establishments, with the exception of tourist farms, where the number of overnight stays decreased by 1%. Compared to 2019, there was an upward trend in overnight stays in camping sites among both foreign and domestic tourists; the total number of overnight stays went up by 16%. The number of domestic tourists in hotels increased by a quarter.

More permanent bed places available to tourists than in previous years

In 2022, almost 175,000 permanent bed places were available to tourists, which is 7% more than the year before and 4% more than in 2019.

32% of all permanent bed places were available in hotels and similar accommodation establishments (4% more than in 2021), 19% in camping sites (8% more) and 49% in other accommodation establishments (8% more).

Most permanent bed places were available in mountain resorts (35%), followed by seaside resorts (18%), other municipalities (16%) and health (spa) resorts (14%). A tenth of all permanent bed places were available in Ljubljana.
