More road vehicles registered

At the end of 2022, almost 1.7 million road vehicles were registered in Slovenia, which is 2% more than at the end of 2021. There were about 1.6 million motor vehicles, also 2% more, and almost 57,000 trailing vehicles, 4% more. There were about 1.2 million passenger cars registered, representing 74% of all road motor vehicles or 2% more than in the previous year.

Far fewer road vehicles registered for the first time than before the corona period

Last year, almost 116,000 road vehicles were registered in Slovenia for the first time. Compared to 2021, the number was 8% lower. Compared to pre-corona year 2019, the number was 21% lower. About 78,000 passenger cars were registered for the first time or 11% fewer than in 2021 and 27% fewer than in 2019.

Lower decrease in first-time registered used passenger cars than in new ones

In 2022, over 73,000 or 63% of all first-time registered road vehicles were new, i.e. they had not been registered abroad before. The number of first-time registered new road vehicles in 2021 was 10% lower than in 2021 and 28% lower than in 2019. The number of first registrations of new passenger cars was 15% lower than in 2021 and 37% lower than in 2019. The decrease in first-time registered used passenger cars was lower, as their number went down by 7% compared to 2021 and by 5% compared to 2019.

The lowest renewal rate of the passenger car fleet

The share of first registrations of new passenger cars among all registered passenger cars in 2022 was 3.8%, 0.7 of a percentage point lower than in 2021 and 2.5 p.p. lower than in 2019. The renewal rate of passenger cars (passenger car fleet) was thus the lowest since 1998, i.e. since we started to monitor the data on the first registrations of new vehicles.

Motorization rate up for the second consecutive year

Last year, 572 passenger cars per 1,000 population were registered in Slovenia. As for many years now, the motorization rate was the highest in the Goriška statistical region (635) and the lowest in the Zasavska statistical region (544). The motorization rate increased by 8 passenger cars per 1,000 population or by 1.5%. It went up the most in the Podravska statistical region.

The average age of passenger cars in all statistical regions over ten years

In 2022, passenger cars registered in Slovenia were on average 10.9 years old. On average, they were the least old in the Osrednjeslovenska statistical region, but they still exceeded ten years (10.2). The vehicle fleet continues to be the oldest in Goriška (12.6 years).

Among first-time registered new passenger cars a fifth hybrids

At the end of 2022, a half of registered passenger cars were using diesel and 46% petrol fuel. Compared to 2021, the number of diesel and petrol cars went up by 1%. The number of hybrid passenger cars increased by 54% to almost 24,800, which is 2% of all registered passenger cars. The number of electric passenger cars increased by 47% to almost 8,000, which is 0.7% of all registered passenger cars.

As regards new passenger cars registered for the first time, the ratios by type of drive and fuel are different than for registered passenger cars. Out of all first-time registered new passenger cars in Slovenia in 2022, 20% were hybrid cars and 5% were electric cars. In one year, the number of first registrations of new hybrid passenger cars went up by a tenth and of electric cars by almost a third (32%).
