Consumer price indices, December 2022
Annual inflation 10.3%, monthly inflation 0.2%
The year ends with 10.3% inflation. It was mostly marked by high prices of food, and electricity, gas and other fuels. In one year, goods prices went up by 11.5% and service prices by 7.7%. At the monthly level, consumer prices went up by 0.2%.
In one year, prices on average up by 10.3%
In 2022, consumer prices rose by 10.3% annually (in 2021 by 4.9%), while the average annual price growth was 8.8%.
On average, goods prices went up by 11.5% and service prices by 7.7%. As regards goods, non-durable goods prices went up by 14.5%, durable goods prices by 8.2% and semi-durable goods prices by 3.8%.
The largest upward impact on annual inflation, 3.1 percentage points, came from 18.6% higher prices of food and non-alcoholic beverages, followed by 18% more expensive electricity, gas and other fuels with a contribution of 1.4 p.p. The prices of furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance rose by 12.9% and pushed inflation up by 1 p.p.
At the monthly level prices on average up by 0.2%
In December, consumer prices were on average 0.2% higher than a month before.
The monthly growth rate was pushed up the most, by 0.3 of a percentage point, by 1.7% higher prices of food. 0.1 p.p. each, came from price increases in the groups household furniture (by 2.7%), communication (by 2.7%), restaurants and hotels (by 1%), recreational and cultural services (by 3.5%), and health (by 0.9%).
On the other hand, the monthly growth rate was pushed down the most (by 0.5 p.p.) by lower prices of petroleum products: the prices of liquid fuels decreased by 12.5% and of fuels and lubricants for personal transport equipment by 6.2%. Package holidays were 3.4% cheaper and eased inflation by 0.1 p.p.
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, the annual growth of consumer prices was 10.8% (in December 2021 5.1%). The monthly price growth was 0.1% (previous month 1.1%).
At the annual level, goods prices went up on average by 12% and service prices by 8.2%. As regards goods, non-durable goods prices went up by 15.5%, durable goods prices by 6.6%, and semi-durable goods prices by 4.4%.
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in November 2022 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 10.1% (down from 10.6% in October). In the EU-27 Member States it was 11.1% (down from 11.5% in October). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Spain (6.7%) and the highest in Hungary (23.1%); in Slovenia it stood at 10.8%.
