Experimental statistics: Scope of collaborative economy in the field of short-term tourist accommodation rentals, 2020 and 2021
Significantly fewer short-stay accommodation bookings via online platforms during the COVID-19 epidemic
In 2021, 1.2 million guest nights spent in holiday and other short-stay accommodation in Slovenia were booked via one of the four major international online booking platforms, which is 50% fewer than in 2019.
The collaborative economy in the field of tourism heavily affected by the COVID-19 epidemic
Tourism was heavily affected by the COVID-19 epidemic. In order to limit the exposure to health risks, people were more reluctant to travel, and several restrictions limited the possibilities of traveling and of offering accommodation. Compared to 2019, 42% fewer tourist overnight stays were generated in Slovenia in 2020 and 29% fewer in 2021.
In this period, the COVID-19 epidemic also heavily affected the collaborative economy in the field of tourism. In 2020 and 2021, significantly fewer short-stay accommodation (in the Standard Classification of Activities SKD 2008 classified in group 55.2 »Holiday and other short-stay accommodation«) bookings via one of the four major international online booking platforms (Airbnb, Booking, Expedia Group and Tripadvisor) were generated in Slovenia.
Further on, this release complements the one on international online platforms' data on tourist overnight stays at short-stay accommodation in Slovenia in 2019.
Significantly fewer short-stay accommodation bookings via online platforms in Slovenia during the COVID-19 epidemic
In 2020, tourists generated 96,000 bookings (stays) of short-stay accommodation (a third of the 2019 value) in Slovenia via online platforms, which resulted in 877,000 guest nights (two thirds fewer than in 2019).
In 2021, with the COVID-19 epidemic containment measures being eased in the field of tourism, 140,000 such bookings (stays) were generated via online platforms, which resulted in 1.2 million guest nights (50% fewer than in 2019).
The majority of short-stay accommodation bookings (stays) and nights were generated by foreign tourists. They generated 80% of all guest nights at short-stay accommodation offered via online platforms in 2020 (87% in 2021).
According to the official national accommodation statistics, which already includes the data on tourist overnight stays generated via online platforms, tourists in 2020 generated 3.6 million overnight stays at holiday and other short-stay accommodation (4.2 million in 2021). About a quarter of tourist overnight stays were generated via online platforms.
Most short-stay accommodation bookings via online platforms in summer months also during the COVID-19 epidemic
With the start of the COVID-19 epidemic in March 2020, the number of short-stay accommodation bookings via online platforms dropped significantly.
Tourists who booked their short-stay accommodation via one of the four online platforms generated fewer than 10,000 guest nights in April and May 2020. The number then stabilized in the summer of 2020, when in August, the most guest nights in 2020 were generated (256,000 or 60% fewer than in August 2019).
In autumn 2020, when we witnessed the second wave of the COVID-19 epidemic, tourists again generated fewer than 10,000 guest nights in November 2020. Only when the COVID-19 containment measures were eased in May 2021, the number grew to 26,000 and reached the peak of 2021 in August 2021, when 408,000 guest nights were generated at short-stay accommodation offered via online platforms (60% more than in August 2020, but 35% fewer than in August 2019).
Almost 60% of all guest nights at short-stay accommodation offered via online platforms in 2021 were generated in only two months – July and August.

The largest number of nights among foreign tourists at short-stay accommodation offered via online platforms in 2021 were generated by tourists from Germany (257,000 or 25% of foreign guest nights). They were followed by tourists from Czechia and Hungary.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
Data are published as experimental statistics, as Eurostat for the first time obtained the privately held data directly from international online booking platforms for analysing the scope of collaborative economy in the field of short-term accommodation rentals. The methodology of data analysis is being developed and therefore does not yet meet the criteria of official statistics.
Only aggregated data for the four platforms are released due to the protection of reporting units’ confidentiality.
