Bad weather conditions strongly impacted fruit and honey self-sufficiency rates

In 2021, a resident of Slovenia consumed on average 119 kg of vegetables, 117 kg of cereals, 109 kg of fruit, 89 kg of meat, 63 kg of potatoes, 11 kg of eggs and 0.60 kg of honey for food.

Self-sufficiency rates for plant products lower than a year earlier

Due to bad weather conditions, self-sufficiency rates in 2021 were lower than in 2020 for all plant products, but higher for animal products, except for honey. Regarding the plant products, the self-sufficiency rate for fruit (14%) was lower by 23 percentage points, for potatoes (44%) by 16 percentage points, for vegetables (44%) by 5 percentage points and for cereals (84%) by 4 percentage points. Regarding animal products, the self-sufficiency rate in eggs (97%) was 2 percentage points higher and in meat (85%) 1 percentage point higher. The self-sufficiency rate for honey (15%) was lower by 52 percentage points.

Smaller domestic production of cereals

Domestic production of cereals reached 701,000 tonnes in 2021, which is 6% less than in the previous year. Domestic consumption decreased by 2% and amounted to 833,000 tonnes. Due to lower domestic production in 2021 and consumption of cereals remaining at a comparable level, the self-sufficiency rate in cereals fell by 4 percentage points.

The weather had a negative impact on fruit and honey production

Unfavourable weather conditions in 2021 had a major impact on the domestic production of fruit and honey. 34,000 tonnes of fruit were produced, which was 70% less than in the previous year. Domestic honey production reached 200 tonnes, which was 85% less than a year ago.

Average consumption of meat and eggs up, of honey, fruit and potatoes down

In 2021, a resident of Slovenia consumed on average the most vegetables (119 kg) and cereals (117 kg), followed by fruit (109 kg), meat (89 kg), potatoes (63 kg), eggs (11 kg) and honey (0.60 kg). Compared to the previous year, the average consumption of honey was lower by 33%, of fruit by 16% and of potatoes by 1%, while the average consumption of eggs went up by 4% and of meat by 1%. The average consumption of cereals and vegetables remained at the level of the previous year.
