Energy statistics, 2021
Lower domestic production, higher final energy consumption
In 2021, domestic energy production in Slovenia was 7% lower and total final energy consumption 7% higher than in the previous year. For the first time, we are publishing data on annual electricity consumption by customer type and municipalities.
Over half of the energy demand was met with domestic energy resources
Domestic energy production in 2021 was over 143,000 terajoules (TJ) or 7% less than a year earlier. Nuclear energy accounted for the largest share with almost 44%, followed by renewable energy sources (including hydro energy) with 35% and energy from coal with 21%. With domestic energy resources, Slovenia met over half (almost 53%) of its domestic energy demand, while the remaining amount was imported.
Petroleum products prevailed in the energy supply
Considering energy import and export, almost 275,000 TJ were available for energy supply in 2021. In the structure of energy supply petroleum products prevailed with 31%, followed by nuclear energy with 23%, energy from renewable sources (including hydro energy) with 20%, coal with 14% and natural gas with 12%.
Most energy for transport
Final energy consumption in Slovenia in 2021 was almost 202,000 TJ or 7% more than a year earlier. Consumption in the transport sector represented the highest share (over 37%). The second highest consumer was manufacturing and construction with 28%, followed by households with 24% and by other users with 11%.
Petroleum products represented the highest share in final energy consumption (almost 43%), followed by electricity with 24%, renewable energy with 16%, natural gas with 13%, heat with 4% and solid fuels with 1%.
Most energy in households for space heating
Final energy consumption in households was almost 48,600 TJ or 6% more than a year earlier. Most of the final energy in households was consumed for space heating (64%), followed by lighting and electrical appliances with 15%, water heating with 15%, cooking with 5% and space cooling with 1%.
Among energy sources consumed in households, wood fuels prevailed with 39%, followed by electricity with 28%, natural gas with 10%, extra light heating oil with almost 8%, district heat with 7%, ambient heat (utilized by heat pumps) with 5%, liquefied petroleum gas with almost 3% and solar energy with 1%.
New: annual data on electricity consumption by customer type and municipalities
For the first time, data on electricity consumption for households and business entities by municipalities have been published in the SiStat Database at the annual level for 2021. Households and business entities consumed more than 11 terawatt-hours (TWh) of electricity.
Tables with the latest data are available in the SiStat Database.
