Less water used than in 2020

In 2021, less water was used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants than in the previous year. The amount was 10% lower than in 2020, but still almost 6% higher than in 2019.

Industrial activities used less water

Industrial activities used 92,889 million m3 of water or 10% less than in 2020. This was mainly due to less favourable hydrological conditions, which reflected in less water being used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants. The largest share represented water used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants registered in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply.The amount of this water was 92,000 million m3. A smaller amount of water was used in hydroelectric power plants registered in manufacturing, i.e. 158 million m3.

More water was used only in mining and quarrying, by 18%. In manufacturing, water use was reduced by 5% and in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply by 10%. In both activities, the reason was already mentioned reduced water use for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants. In water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation activities, water use decreased the most, namely by 17%.

Of the mentioned 92,889 million m3 of water, industrial activities used 92,150 million m3, while 736 million m3 of water was used for cooling processes. The remaining 3 million m3 of water was used for sanitation and other purposes (vehicle washing, watering the greens, etc.).

Less discharged wastewater

In 2021, industrial activities discharged 751 million m3 of wastewater, which was 9% less than in the previous year. The majority of wastewater, 97%, was only heat-polluted. Of the rest of the 61 million m3 of wastewater, almost 22 million m3 was treated. The biggest part of wastewater was treated in manufacturing. Only in mentioned activity, the ratio between treated and untreated wastewater was positive (57:43). The amount of treated wastewater was slightly more than 21 million m3, while the amount of untreated was approximately 16 million m3.

Mechanical-chemical-biological wastewater treatment method was dominant

In industrial activities, 21.8 million m3 of wastewater was treated. The mechanical-chemical-biological method was used to treat 8.9 million m3 of wastewater or 41.0% of all treated wastewater in industrial activities. 6.4 million m3 of wastewater was treated with the mechanical-chemical method, which represented 29.2%. Next were the mechanical method with 4.3 million m3 and the mechanical-biological method with 1.1 million m3 of treated wastewater. The former represented 19.8% and the latter 5.1%. The remaining amount of wastewater was treated using other treatment methods.

Five-year review of water used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants indicates fluctuations

In 2017, the least water was used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants in Vzhodna and Zahodna Slovenija cohesion regions in the last five years. In Vzhodna Slovenija the most water was used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants in 2020, and in Zahodna Slovenija in 2021. In 2020, the total amount of water used for turbine drive in hydroelectric power plants was almost by a third higher (32%) than in 2017.
