More than 3 million tourist overnight stays
In August, accommodation establishments recorded 1.1 million tourist arrivals and a record number of tourist overnight stays – more than 3 million. While domestic tourists generated a half fewer overnight stays, foreign generated a half more than in August 2021.
Foreign tourists generated 857,000 arrivals and 2.3 million overnight stays, 50% more than last year and 2% more than in August before the pandemic.
Domestic tourists generated 23% of all overnight stays. Tourist accommodation establishments in Slovenia recorded almost 196,000 of their arrivals and almost 698,000 of their overnight stays, which is 50% fewer than in August last year, but 9% more than in August 2019.
Foreign tourists mostly spent the nights in the municipality of Ljubljana. They generated 98% of all overnight stays in the capital. Domestic tourists mostly stayed in the municipality of Piran, which was also the municipality with the most tourist overnight stays overall.
Among tourists with the largest share of overnight stays also tourists from France
The largest share of overnight stays among foreign tourists in August 2022 was generated by tourists from Germany, just over half a million or 22% of all. They spent the most nights in Bovec. 11% of all overnight stays were generated by tourists from the Netherlands and Italy. They were followed by tourists from France, who spent most of their nights in Ljubljana, and tourists from Czechia and Austria.
The share of tourist overnight stays the largest in mountain resorts
As regards the types of municipalities, the largest share of tourist overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts (38%) - the most in the municipality of Bled. One fifth of all overnight stays was generated in seaside resorts, followed by health (spa) resorts (15%).
Compared to August 2021, the number of overnight stays increased the most in Ljubljana (by 57%). The largest decrease was recorded in health (spa) resorts (by 16%).
The largest share of tourist overnight stays in hotels
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (almost 915,900 or 30% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings (26%) and camping sites (24%).
Approximately 11.7 million tourist overnight stays in the first eight months of the year
From the beginning of January to the end of August, Slovenia was visited by around 4.3 million tourists, who generated 11.7 million overnight stays, which is more than in the whole of 2021.
Domestic tourists generated almost 4.2 million overnight stays or 36% of all overnight stays so far, 11% more than last year, and foreign 7.5 million, which is 138% more than in the same period last year.
Due to mistakes detected in statistical data for municipality Nova Gorica, with this release we are also publishing in the SiStat Database corrected data on accommodation establishments’ capacity for December 2020. Data in the Sistat Database have been corrected compared to the release of 25 February 2021. As the correction also affected the totals of the parent categories and annual data, they were also corrected accordingly. From January 2022 on, an updated classification of types of tourist municipalities is being used. The municipality of Krško is now classified under urban municipalities (and no longer under other municipalities). Additional explanations are available in the methodological explanations.
