In August, too, less milk collected than a year ago
Around 47,600 tonnes of milk was collected from agricultural holdings in August, which was 3.0% less than a year ago. Compared to the previous month, dairies increased the production of all groups of milk products, while compared to August 2021 they substantially increased only cheese production.
Again less milk collected than a year ago
For the sixth consecutive month, less cows’ milk was collected than in the same month of last year. Compared to August 2021, 3.0% less milk was collected. Compared to the previous month, 2.4% less milk was collected. Due to drought, lower production of milk is expected also in the coming months. In the first eight months, 1.7% less milk was collected than in the same period last year.
Dairies increased production over the previous month
Dairies increased the production of all main milk product groups. Compared to the previous month, the production of milk powder increased the most; dairies produced more than 10 times more milk powder. Cheese production increased by almost 12%, cream production by more than 7%, acidified milk production by almost 6%, while butter and drinking milk production increased by about 3% and 2%, respectively.
With the exception of cheese and acidified milk, lower production at the annual level
Compared to August 2021, dairies decreased the production of milk powder the most: by almost 32%. Butter production decreased by almost 11% and cream and drinking milk production by about 10%. Dairies produced more than 1,400 tonnes of cheese, which was almost 14% more than a year ago. Dairies also increased the production of acidified milk products (by almost 2%).

In the first eight months, dairies produced more than 7% less drinking milk. Cream production was lower by more than 11% and butter production by almost 4%. On the other hand, dairies produced almost 7% more cheese and about 1% more acidified milk products.
Average price of raw milk in the EU is still rising
In the first seven months of 2022, dairies in the EU collected 0.5% less cows’ milk and decreased the production of all groups of milk products except cream. In July, dairies collected 0.4% more milk than a year ago. Average price of raw milk in the EU increased for the 18th month in a row, this time by 3.3% to EUR 0.510 per kg. An additional price increase is expected also in August.
