Organically grown cereals did well in 2021

The output of organically grown cereals in 2021 was 5,866 tonnes, 4% larger than the previous year.

1% more organic farms than a year ago

In 2021, the system of control of organic production comprised 3,724 agricultural holdings or 1% more than in the previous year. The number of agricultural holdings with the status of organic producers was the same (3,358). The rest were agricultural holdings in conversion (366); in comparison with 2020, their number went up by 11%. All agricultural holdings in the system of control of organic production in 2021 (3,724) represented, when compared to the first provisional data of the 2021 Agricultural Census, 5% of all agricultural holdings in Slovenia; those that already reached the status of organic producers represented 4.9% of all agricultural holdings in Slovenia. 

Organic utilised agricultural area slightly larger than the previous year

Organic utilised agricultural areas (44,761 hectares) increased by 1,260 hectares or 3%. By far the largest share (81%) of organic utilised agricultural area was still that of permanent grassland. Compared to the previous year, the area of organic permanent grassland increased by almost 800 hectares (or by 2 %), and the area of arable land more than 100 hectares (also by 2%). The organic area for production of vegetables including melons and strawberries was 15 hectares (or 6%) larger than in the previous year. The areas of organic orchards and olive groves were also larger than in the previous year, of orchards almost 270 hectares (15%) and of olive trees by 13 hectares (6%). The area of vineyards increased by 80 hectares (15%). 

Output of organically grown cereals was good

The output of organically grown cereals in 2021 (5,866 tonnes) was 4% larger than in the previous year, due to, among other things, the slightly (1%) larger area on which organic cereals were grown. The output of organically grown wheat and spelt (2,046 tonnes) was 19% larger than the year before, when 1,716 tonnes were produced. Wheat and spelt in organic production were sown on a 19% (126 hectares) larger area. Organic production of barley and oats weighed less than the year before (barley by 14%, oats by 3%). Organic potato production was 1,336 tonnes or 18% lower than in the previous year, and the area on which organic potatoes were planted decreased by 7 hectares.

Organic fruit and olives production dropped due to unfavourable weather conditions

Despite a 15% (268 hectares) larger area, organic production of fruit was extremely low and amounted to 1,327 tonnes, which is 82% less than the year before, when the output was 7,431 tonnes. The output of organically grown vegetables, melons and strawberries was 15% larger than the previous year and amounted to 1,963 tonnes. The output of olives in organic olive groves also decreased (by 52%), although the area was 6% larger compared to 2020. The output in organic vineyards was 6% larger than the previous year and weighed 2,034 tonnes.

In 2021, there were 4% more organically reared pigs (3,099). The number of organically reared cattle (38,836) was 2% higher, of organically reared sheep (33,822) 7% higher and of organically reared goats (6,758) 3% higher than in the previous year. The number of organically reared poultry (82,882) decreased by 6% over 2020 when 87,972 animals were reared. The number of organically reared equidae decreased by 2%, while there were 17% fewer organically reared rabbits. However, the number of beehives in organic farming increased by 6% (from 3,272 to 3,460).

The weight of meat from animals in organic farming up by almost a half 

The total weight of meat from organic farming increased by 48% over the previous year. The weight of cattle meat increased by 57%, of pig meat by 22%, and of equine meat increase by 50%. The weight of poultry meat decreased by 8%, the amount of sheep meat in 2021 decrease by 31% and the weight of other animals meat (game reared in pens) decreased by 35%. There was no goat meat production in 2021.

More milk, less honey and eggs

The production of organic cow’s milk in 2021 was 7,843 tons or 7 % more than in previous year, of sheep milk 173 tons or about 10% less than the previous year, and of goat milk 220 tons or 3% more than the previous year. Compared to 2020, the production of honey and eggs went down by 6%.

Organic farming trends

A comparison of 2021 with the five-year average 2016–2020 showed an 8% growth of organic (certified) utilised agricultural area, the largest share of the total area of organic agricultural land being that of permanent grassland, 82%. Organic (certificated) areas of vineyards went up by 40%, of orchards by 39%, of olive groves by 16% and of arable land by 10%. The number of organic farms increased by 3%, while in the same comparison the number of farms in conversion decreased by 14%.
