Most ships arrived and departed in October
In 2021, 3,045 ships arrived in or departed from all three Slovenian ports. Traffic of passenger vessels was the largest in the port of Piran, while traffic of cargo ships took place only in the port of Koper, where 9% more goods were handled than in the previous year.
In 2021, 3,045 ships arrived in or departed from all three Slovenian ports, 9% more than in 2020. There were 2,990 cargo ships (in 2020, 2,800) and 55 passenger vessels (in 2020 only two). Ship traffic was the largest in October and the smallest in January.
Traffic of passenger vessels was the largest in the port of Piran, where 33 were recorded. Of these, 22 were passenger ships and 11 cruise ships. Only cruise ships arrived in the port of Koper (there were 22 of them), and in 2021 no passenger vessels arrived in the port of Izola.
Cargo ships operate only in the port of Koper. Among cargo ships (2,990), the largest share was represented by container ships (41%), followed by general cargo ships (37%), liquid and dry bulk carriers (20%) and specialized ships (2%).

More passengers in Slovenian ports
In 2021, 6,773 passengers arrived in or departed from Slovenian ports, many more than a year ago, when 114 passengers were recorded. 4,607 passengers arrived in or departed from the port of Koper, of whom 96% were cruise ship passengers. 2,166 passengers arrived in or departed from the port of Piran, 18% of whom were on cruise ships.
More goods handled in the port of Koper
20 million tonnes of goods were handled in the port of Koper, 9% more than in 2020. Most goods were handled in March and the least in August. Among the individual types of cargo handled in 2021, the heaviest cargo was in containers, amounting to 9 million tonnes. This was followed by dry bulk cargo (5.4 million tonnes), liquid bulk cargo (3.3 million tonnes) and mobile units and other general cargo (each about 1 million tonnes).
