Foreign travellers, December 2021–January 2022

Travellers through Slovenia came predominantly from neighbouring countries

In the selected period, the majority of foreign travellers were in transit and most of same-day visitors came from neighbouring countries. In winter months same-day visitors came to Slovenia for business reasons and for shopping.

Most foreign travellers were in transit

In the selected period around 4.380.000 foreign travellers were leaving Slovenia on road border crossings. Most of them were transit travellers (73%). There were around 354.000 (8%) same-day visitors. Other foreign travellers came to Slovenia for work, school or everyday errands. 

Of all foreign travellers who came to Slovenia in winter months residents of neighbouring countries were prevalent. 22% were from Croatia, 21% from Italy and 15% from Austria, followed by residents of Germany (11%) and Ukraine (5%). Most foreign transit travellers came from Austria and Croatia while same-day visitors were predominantly from Italy and Croatia. 

In the selected period, the majority of foreign travellers who came to Slovenia were travelling alone (39%), followed by those who travelled in the company of a spouse or partner (27%). Most of them travelled in a car. 

Same-day visitors came to Slovenia for business reasons

36% of all foreign travellers in December 2021 and January 2022 visited Slovenia for business reasons. 27% stated shopping as their main reason for arrival and 26% came to visit their friends and family. 

Half of all same-day visitors in the selected period came to Slovenia from Italy for business reasons and for shopping. In winter months more than 60% of same-day visitors from Austria and 21% from Croatia came to Slovenia for a business trip. Same-day visitors on a business trip spent on average EUR 125 per day. 

Foreign travellers spent most of their money in Slovenia on transport

In the observed period, a foreign traveller in Slovenia spent on average EUR 38 per day. Same-day visitors had more expenses in the observed period (EUR 86). Transit travellers spent less, EUR 33 on average. The largest share of expenditures for foreign travellers were transport costs and expenses for shopping. 

In the observed period, same-day visitors who came to Slovenia due to shopping on average EUR 104 per day and allocated most of their expenses for shopping (38%), followed by transport costs (36%). Among all foreign travellers and all same-day visitors, residents of Italy spent the most during their travel in Slovenia.
