In May, too, less milk collected than a year ago
Around 51,900 tons of milk was collected from agricultural holdings in May, which was 2.9% less than a year ago. Dairies decreased the production of drinking milk, cream and butter, and increased the production of cheese and milk powder.
In May, too, less milk collected than a year ago
In May 2022, 2.9% less milk was collected than in May 2021. Milk collection has not decreased that substantially since 2018. Compared to the previous month, 2.5% more milk was collected. This seasonal increase was lower than usual and considering weather conditions, we expect lower production of milk also in the coming months. In first five months of 2022, 1% less milk was collected than in the same period last year.
Less drinking milk, butter and cream, more cheese and particularly milk powder
Dairies decreased the production of butter by more than 23%, of drinking milk by more than 10% and of cream by more than 4%. On the other hand, the production of milk powder increased by almost 184% and of cheese by more than 8%.
At the annual level similar trends as at the monthly level
Compared to the previous month, dairies decreased the production of butter by more than 22%, of drinking milk by more than 13%, of cream by almost 13% and of acidified milk by almost 5%.They increased the production of milk powder by more than 119% and of cheese by more than 7%.
Average price of raw milk in the EU is still rising
In the first four months of 2022 Dairies in the EU collected 0.6% less cows’ milk and decreased the production of milk products (with the exception of cream). In April 2022, dairies collected 1.6% less milk than a year ago. Average price of raw milk in the EU increased by 5.7% to EUR 0.460 per kg and is expected to increase again in May and June 2022.
