A return of tourist arrivals from non-European countries in May
Tourist accommodation establishments recorded 461,000 tourist arrivals and 1.1 million overnight stays in May, which is three times more than in the same period a year ago. The number of tourists from other continents increased.
Tourist accommodation establishments in Slovenia recorded more than 187,000 domestic tourist arrivals and 477,000 of their overnight stays, which is 56% more than in May of record-breaking 2019.
Foreign tourists generated 274,000 arrivals and almost 660,000 overnight stays, which is 21% fewer than in May 2019.
Most foreign overnight stays by tourists from Germany
Foreign tourists generated 58% of all overnight stays. The largest number of these stays was generated by tourists from Germany (114,200 or 17% of all foreign overnight stays). They were followed by tourists from Austria (86,600 or 13%), Italy (43,500 or 7%), Serbia (5%), Hungary and Croatia (4% from each).
Among foreign tourists, there was an increase in tourist arrivals from other continents. A significant increase was recorded in arrivals of tourists from the USA. They generated 27,200 overnight stays in May, which represented half of their overnight stays generated from the beginning of January to the end of May 2022. Additionally, the number of arrivals of tourists from the group of other Asian countries increased. In May, they generated approximately 40% of their overnight stays from the beginning of the year to the end of May.
A quarter of tourist overnight stays in mountain resorts
As regards the types of municipalities, the largest number of tourist overnight stays was recorded in mountain resorts (267,400 or 24% of all overnight stays), followed by health (spa) resorts (almost 251,600 or 22%), seaside resorts (almost 240,200 or 21%) and Ljubljana (171,400 or 15%).
While domestic tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in the municipality of Piran (approximately 80,200), foreign tourists generated the most overnight stays in Ljubljana (almost 160,000).
The most popular accommodation establishment type is hotels
Tourists generated most overnight stays in hotels (almost 556,000 or 49% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms, dwellings (19% of all overnight stays) and camping sites (11% of all overnight stays).
More than 4 million tourist overnight stays in the first five months of 2022
From the beginning of January to the end of May, substantially more tourist arrivals and overnight stays were recorded than in the same period of 2021. Namely, 1.3 million tourist arrivals and 3.4 million overnight stays more. Domestic as well as foreign tourists generated about 2 million overnight stays each in this period.

As few tourist arrivals and overnight stays were recorded in May 2021, the values of indices of tourist arrivals and overnight stays for May 2022 are unusually high.
Persons coming to Slovenia from Ukraine, who are accommodated in accommodation establishments appointed by the Government of the Republic of Slovenia in accordance to International Protection Act (OJ RS, No.16/17 – official consolidated text and 54/21), are not obliged to pay the tourist taxes in line with the Promotion of Tourism Development Act (OJ RS, No. 13/18). Therefore, their overnight stays are not a part of accommodation statistics.
From January 2022 on, an updated classification of types of tourist municipalities is being used. The municipality of Krško is now classified under urban municipalities (and no longer under other municipalities).
