Fewer employer enterprise births than a year ago

In 2020, 5,470 employer enterprise births were recorded or 19.3% fewer than in the previous year. The number of these enterprises decreased the most in professional, scientific and technical activities.

Fewer employer enterprise births than in the previous year

In 2020, 5,470 employer enterprise births were recorded, which is 19.3% fewer than in 2019. The number of employees in enterprise births was 17.5% lower and the number of persons employed 18.2% lower. The largest number of employer enterprise births was recorded in construction (18.9%), followed by wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (16.3%) and professional, scientific and technical activities (16.2%).

According to the legal form, 53.1% of enterprise births were legal persons and 46.9% were natural persons.

Natural persons prevailed among the employer enterprise deaths

In 2020, according to provisional data there were 6,831 employer enterprise deaths. The largest number of employer enterprise deaths was recorded in professional, scientific and technical activities (16.2%), followed by wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (15.7%) and construction (14.1%).

54.0% of employer enterprise deaths were natural persons and 46.0% were legal persons.

Of all active enterprises in Slovenia with at least one employee in 2020, 7.5% were employer enterprise births in that year, and 9.3% employer enterprise deaths.

80% of employer enterprise births were operating after one year

80.2% of enterprises born in 2019 were still operating in 2020. 54.3% of enterprises born in 2017 were operating after three years and 42.7% of enterprises born in 2015 were operating after five years. 

The shares of enterprises that were still operating one year after birth were the highest in transport and storage (87.9%), construction (83.3%) and real estate (82.5%). In employer enterprise births operating after one year, the number of persons employed increased by 47.8 % (from 8,809 in 2019 to 13,019 in 2020).

The majority of employer enterprise births and deaths employed a maximum of 4 employees

The vast majority of employer enterprise births and deaths in 2020 employed a maximum of 4 employees each: 1 to 4 employees were employed by 97%, 5 to 9 by 2.2% and 10 and more employees by 0.8% of employer enterprise births, and 1 to 4 employees by 98.2%, 5 to 9 by 1.2% and 10 and more employees by 0.6% of employer enterprise deaths.
