5,767 enterprise groups, more than a third of them all-resident

Fewer than 1% of all enterprises in Slovenia were integrated into domestically controlled multinational groups. They generated 22% of total turnover in 2020 and employed almost 11% of persons employed in Slovenia.

Almost half of enterprise groups were under foreign control

Among all enterprise groups (5,767), all-resident enterprise groups represented 36%. 923 (16%) multinational enterprise groups were domestically controlled and a little less than half (48%) were foreign controlled. Similarly to 2019, nearly half (44%) of foreign controlled multinational enterprise groups were controlled by four countries (Austria, Croatia, Germany and United Kingdom).


The share of all-resident enterprise groups was the highest in professional, scientific and technical activities (22%), while the shares of domestically controlled multinational enterprise groups and foreign controlled multinational enterprise groups were the highest in wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (23% and 32%, respectively).

Enterprises integrated into enterprise groups employed more than a third of all persons employed in Slovenia

8,606 or about 4% of all enterprises in Slovenia were integrated into enterprise groups. They employed nearly 35% of all persons employed and generated almost 60% of total turnover in Slovenia.

Enterprises integrated into multinational enterprise groups generated a little over half (52%) of total turnover in Slovenia and employed more than a quarter (28%) of all persons employed. Fewer than 1% of all enterprises in Slovenia were integrated into domestically controlled multinational groups. They generated 22% of total turnover in Slovenia and employed almost 11% of persons employed in Slovenia.


Enterprises integrated into foreign controlled multinational enterprise groups generated more turnover

In 2020, 4,554 enterprises in Slovenia were integrated into multinational enterprise groups. 63% of them were integrated into foreign controlled enterprise groups; they employed 21% more persons and generated 15% more turnover than enterprises integrated into domestically controlled enterprises groups. However, turnover per employee was higher in enterprises integrated into domestically controlled multinational enterprise groups.
