Fewer births, more deaths
According to provisional data for April 2022, 1,279 children were born (15% fewer than a year before) and 1,815 people died (1% more than a year before).
Fewer live births
1,279 children were born (217 or 15% fewer than in April 2021). On average 43 children were born per day (50 a year earlier).
More deaths
1,815 people died. This is 14 (1%) more than in April 2021 and 217 (11%) fewer than in March 2022. On average 61 people died per day (60 a year earlier).
Excess mortality (i.e. excess number of deaths compared to the average number of deaths in April in 2015–2019) was 9.2%.
What do data for May show us?
According to the first estimate, 1,183 people died between 1 and 22 May 2022. In the same period of 2021, 1,257 people died.
