On an average day, a quarter of residents of Slovenia did not leave their residence

In 2021, residents of Slovenia (aged 15–84 years) performed on average 2.2 trips per day (2.7 in 2017). The share of residents who did not make any trip in the distance from 100 m to 300 km on an average day increased to 24% (17% in 2017). The decrease in the number of trips was the result of the COVID-19 epidemic.

Two thirds of trips by a car with only a driver in it

Residents of Slovenia performed 31 km per person per day, which took them about 52 minutes. They mostly used cars as 67% of trips were made by cars, which is the same as in 2017. However, only a driver was in the car on 70% of the trips, so the car occupancy rate was 1.5 (1.7 in 2017).
85% of distances of trips were made by cars and 5% by public means of transport (7% in 2017).

Walking – the most frequent mode of movement only on trips up to 1 kilometre

The second most frequent mode of movement was walking. 21% of trips were made on foot. Only at distances of up to 1 kilometre, most trips were made on foot (71%). On trips at distances from 1 to 2.5 km, 36% were made on foot and 9% by bicycles.

Public transport – the main mode of transport only on trips with the purpose of education

Each trip begins with only one purpose; however, several modes of transport can be used. Leisure and work were the most frequent purposes of the trips (36% and 27%, respectively), while the third most frequent trip purpose was shopping (16%). Public means of transport were most often used on trips with the purpose of education (46%), while cars were the most frequently used at all other purposes of trips.

Most trips shorter than 50 km

The average trip was 13.8 km long and it lasted 23 minutes.
Trips with the purpose of shopping were the shortest by distance travelled and by travel time. Trips with the purpose of education were longer by distance and travel time than trips to work and back.
