In 2020, museums and galleries in Slovenia organised 893 exhibitions in their premises and additional 185 e-exhibitions.

A significant impact of the COVID-19 pandemic

About 94% of museums and galleries reported that in 2020 their activity was significantly hindered. At the same time, 73% of them reported that the situation stimulated other forms of activities. They prepared fewer exhibitions (893) than a year earlier (1,406). he COVID-19 pandemic shrank their activity significantly: the number of exhibitions by more than a third and attendance by almost two thirds.
Each exhibition was seen on average by almost 1,100 visitors. A year earlier 2,000.

For the first time, museums and galleries were asked about the number of e-exhibitions curated specifically for virtual space. In 2020, 185 such e-exhibitions were set up, and attendance was estimated at more than 650,000.

Slovenian museums and galleries organised 211 tours in other institutions, 80% of them in other places around Slovenia, 35 exhibitions in other EU Member States and five outside the EU.

The wealth of museums and galleries

In 2020, museums, institutions with museum collections and galleries had around 8.7 million museum or gallery objects; 57% of them were inventoried. Among visual or art objects, almost 92% were photographs.

In 2020, museums and galleries spent almost EUR 520,000 on purchasing objects, while the total value of acquired objects was estimated at over EUR 2.4 million.

Educational programs in museums and galleries

Many museums and galleries prepare various workshops, guided tours, interactive events, lectures, discussions, etc., for their visitors. The impact of COVID-19 on this activity was also clear.

Museums and galleries were also asked about the offer of virtual educational events. In 2020, there were 1,757 e-events, which is an additional 10% of the total educational program in museums and galleries.

Is access to museums enabled for everyone?

In 2020, 27 museums and galleries provided fully arranged access to exhibition and event premises for people with physical impairment; 53 had partly arranged access, and 13 had no access.

For the time being, access of sensory impaired persons to the mentioned institutions is possible to a lesser extent: access was fully arranged in nine, partly arranged in 37, and not arranged at all in 46 of them.

Museum and gallery staff

The 93 museums, institutions with museum collections and galleries covered by the survey had 1,035 employees (2019: 1,048) and 1,629 external associates (2019: 2,014). Of the permanently employed persons, 11.6% were younger than 35 and the majority (930) had full-time employment.

How are museums and galleries financed?

The total revenue of museums and galleries in 2020 amounted to EUR 50.6 million (2019: EUR 55.6 million) and the total expenditure for implementing museum and gallery activities to EUR 50.7 million (2019: EUR 54.0 million.
