Tourism value added and tourism gross domestic product (GDP)
Tourism consumption represented 3.6% of total supply of goods and services in the economy in 2019 and 2.3% in 2020. Upon the calculation of the shares that domestic producers have in the supply of individual groups of tourism products, tourism (direct) value added was calculated. It amounted to EUR 1,636 million in 2019 and dropped to EUR 952 million in 2020. It represented 3.9% of total value added in the economy in 2019 and 2.3% in 2020.
In addition to value added, tourism (direct) GDP comprises also net taxes on expenditures for tourism goods and services. Taking into account all taxes paid as a consequence of tourism consumption, tourism GDP amounted to EUR 2,612 million in 2019 and EUR 1,536 million in 2020. This represented 5.4% in 2019 and 3.3% in 2020 of total GDP in Slovenia.
Total, direct and indirect effects of tourism consumption
In addition to direct effects, tourism consumption has also indirect effects on the increase in output, value added and GDP, since tourism consumption triggers demand also in other parts of the economy supplying goods and services for the production of tourism products (multiplier effects). With the increase in output, incomes of households are also increased and they further trigger demand and consumption. The calculated total value added which was the consequence of tourism consumption amounted to EUR 2,997 million in 2019 and EUR 1,817 million in 2020 or 7.1% and 4.4%, respectively, of total value added in the economy. The calculated total GDP that was the consequence of tourism consumption amounted to EUR 4,127 million in 2019 and EUR 2,485 in 2020 or 8.5% in 2019 and 5.3% in 2020 of GDP in the economy.
