Fewer students enrolled in tertiary education
About 1,000 fewer students were enrolled in tertiary education than in the academic year 2020/21.
About 81,700 students in tertiary education
In the academic year 2021/22, 81,715 students were enrolled in tertiary education, which is 1.2% fewer than in the previous academic year.
In this comparison, 1.4% fewer students were enrolled in higher education (71,094), while 0.5% more were enrolled in higher vocational education (10,621).
64% of all higher education students were enrolled in the 1st cycle higher education programmes (21,845 in professional, 23,494 in academic), 31% in the master programmes (4,700 in uniform, 17,582 following 1st degree) and 5% in the doctoral programmes.
As in previous academic years, there were more women and more full-time students among tertiary education students.
Arts and humanities lost a tenth of their students
Compared to the previous academic year, the number of enrolled students decreased the most in the field of arts and humanities (11.6%) and increased the most in the field of information and communication technologies (ICTs) (8.7%).
The number of enrolled students also increased in the fields of business, administration and law, and health and social security, while in all other fields their number decreased.
As in the previous academic year, the largest share of students enrolled in study programmes in the field of business, administration and law (19%), followed by engineering, manufacturing and construction (18%), and health and social security (14%). On the other hand, the smallest share of students enrolled in the field of agriculture, forestry, fisheries and veterinary medicine (3%).

12,900 students entered higher education for the first time
With the first enrolment in the first year of undergraduate and uniform master studies, 12,927 students entered tertiary education1.
Three quarters of new entrants were 19 years old at the time of first enrolment, a fifth aged 20 to 24, 4% aged 25 years and over, and 1% less than 19 years old.
51% of them enrolled in higher academic studies, 43% in higher professional studies, and 6% in uniform master studies.
Half of new entrants enrolled in study programmes in the fields of business, administration and law (17%), health and social security (17%), and engineering, manufacturing and construction (16%).
There were also more women (58%) and more full-time students (86%) among the new entrants.
Growth in foreign/international students’ number slowed
In the 2021/22 academic year, more foreign/international students enrolled in studies in Slovenia than in the previous year, but the annual increase in their number was smaller than in previous years.
There were 8,553 foreign (non-citizen) students (5.3% more than in the previous year), 7,729 international students based on the country of residence (1.6% more than in the previous year), and 7,842 international students given the country of upper secondary education (25.0% more than in the previous year).
Foreign/international students came from more than 120 different countries, but more than 1,000 students each came to Slovenia from only four (regardless of the country criterion): Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, North Macedonia and Serbia.
