Consumer price indices, March 2022

In March 2022, consumer prices at the annual level up by 5.4%, at the monthly level down by 1.1%

Higher prices of petroleum products had the biggest impact on annual inflation. The prices of petrol went up by 30.3%, of diesel by 29.5% and of liquid fuels by 12.1%. Lower electricity prices (by 38.9%) had the biggest impact on monthly deflation.

Annual inflation lower than in the previous month

Prices went up on average by 5.4% annually (in February 2022 by 6.9%), while the 12-month average price growth was 3.5% (in the same period last year −0.6%).

In one year, goods and service prices increased on average by 6.7% and 2.8%, respectively. As regards goods, durable goods prices went up by 8.8%, non-durable goods prices by 6.7% and semi-durable goods prices by 4.4%.

The biggest impact (1.3 percentage points) came from higher prices of petroleum products (petrol by 30.3%, diesel by 29.5% and liquid fuels by 12.1%). More expensive food (by 6.9%) contributed 1 p.p. Products and services from the group furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance were on average 8.5% more expensive, which translated into 0.6 p.p. of impact. 0.4 p.p. of impact each was added by more expensive heat energy (by 51.9%), new motor cars (by 9.9%), catering services (by 7%) and clothing (by 6.9%).

Electricity was on average cheaper by 29.8%. This decreased the annual inflation by 1 p.p.

Monthly deflation affected by cheaper electricity

The biggest impact (–1.6 p.p.) on deflation in March came from lower electricity prices. Due to the law on emergency measures for mitigation of the impact of high energy prices, electricity was 38.9% cheaper as a direct result of temporary non-payment of certain contributions. The impact of lower prices of package holidays (by 16.1%) was –0.5 p.p. and of wireless telephone service (by 3%) –0.1 p.p.

Petroleum products were more expensive (diesel by 8.6%, petrol by 8.1% and liquid fuels by 7.9%) and mitigated deflation by 0.4 p.p. More expensive clothing (by 3.5%) had 0.2 p.p. of influence. 0.1 p.p. of an impact each came from higher prices of products and services from the group furnishings, household equipment and routine household maintenance (by 0.7%) and food (by 0.4%). Other price increases mitigated the monthly deflation by 0.3 p.p.

Harmonised indices of consumer prices

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, the annual growth of consumer prices was 6% (in March 2021 it was 0.1%). The 12-month average price growth was 3.8% (in the same period last year −0.8%). The monthly price growth was –0.4%.

On average, goods prices went up by 7.2% and service prices by 3.5%. As regards goods, durable goods prices went up by 8.2%, non-durable goods prices by 7.6% and semi-durable goods prices by 4.9%.

Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in February 2022 the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 5.9% (in January: 5.1%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 6.2% (up from 5.6% in January). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in France (4.2%) and the highest in Lithuania (14%); in Slovenia it stood at 7%.
