Agricultural holdings in Murska Sobota with the largest average utilised agricultural area

SURS publishes the final data from the 2020 Agricultural Census in the SiStat Database. According to them, there were 68,331 agricultural holdings in 2020. Most of them (60%) cultivated less than 5 hectares of utilised agricultural area. Together they cultivated one fifth of agricultural land.

Fewer farms, but they are larger

The number of agricultural holdings in Slovenia has been declining since 2000. Thus, in 2000 we had 86,467, in 2010 74,646 and in 2020 68,331 agricultural holdings. The average agricultural holding cultivated 5.6 hectares of utilised agricultural area in 2000, 6.4 hectares in 2010 and 6.9 hectares in 2020.

The average agricultural holding was raising 5.4 livestock units (LSU) in 2000, 5.5 LSU in 2010 and 6.0 LSU in 2020.

There were only 1% of agricultural holdings that cultivated at least 50 hectares of utilized agricultural area (UAA), but they cultivated 15% of all UAA. The number of agricultural holdings with more than 50 hectares increased by almost four times since 2000; in 2020, there were 656 of them.

A quarter (25%) of all agricultural holdings in 2020 cultivated less than 2 hectares and together they cultivated a small part of UAA (4%). Since 2000, the number of agricultural holdings with less than 2 hectares of UAA has decreased by a quarter (by 25% or almost 6,000 agricultural holdings), while in the same comparison the total number of agricultural holdings in Slovenia has decreased by about a fifth (21%).

Municipality Krško had the largest number of agricultural holdings

Agricultural holdings in the municipality of Krško (1,664) jointly cultivated 9,119 hectares of UAA and reared 6,606 LSU. On the other hand, in the municipality of Trzin only 17 agricultural holdings were detected; they cultivated 111 hectares of UAA and reared 141 LSU.

In the municipality of Murska Sobota the average agricultural holding cultivated 23.4 hectares of UAA, which is three times more than the national average and thirteen times more than in Ankaran, which was the municipality with the lowest average UAA per agricultural holding (1.8 hectare).

In the municipality of Kranj the average agricultural holding raised 18.6 LSU, which is three times more than the national average and some two hundred times more than in the municipality of Brda, where the average agricultural holding raised only 0.1 LSU.

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
SURS has been disseminating the data as of 1 January 2015 on according to the changed cohesion and statistical regions. These changes are in line with the NUTS Regulation (EC) No. 1319/2013 and are explained in a Special Release published in December 2013.

First provisional data of the agricultural census, Slovenia, 2020 were published in March 2021.

Second provisional data of the agricultural census, Slovenia, 2020 were published in October 2021.

Main data on the 2020 Agricultural Census are comparable with the data form previous Farm Structure Surveys (2003, 2005, 2007, 2013 and 2016) and Agricultural Censuses (2000 and 2010).

Additional data on the 2020 Agricultural Census (typology of agricultural holdings, labour force and other gainful activities, animal housing and manure management) are expected to be published by the end of May 2022.
