Average earnings lower than earnings for the previous month

Average gross earnings for December 2021 amounted to EUR 2,064.12. Compared to earnings for November 2021, they were lower in nominal and in real terms by 1.0%. Average (monthly) gross earnings for 2021 amounted to EUR 1,969.59 and were in nominal terms by 6.1% higher than earnings for 2020.

Average earnings for December 2021 lower than earnings for November 2021 only in the private sector

Average gross earnings for December 2021 amounted to EUR 2,064.12. Compared to earnings for November 2021, they were lower (in nominal and in real terms) by 1.0%. Average net earnings amounted to EUR 1,336.82 and were lower than earnings for November 2021 by 2.0%.

In the private sector average gross earnings decreased by 2.2% (mainly due to fewer extra payments, i.e. 13th month payments and Christmas bonuses), while in the public sector they were higher by 1.5% (in the institutional sector general government they went up by 4.8%).

Average (monthly) earnings for 2021 increased in the public and in the private sector

Average gross earnings for 2021 amounted to EUR 1,969.59. Compared to earnings for 2020, they were higher (in nominal terms by 6.1% and in real terms by 4.1%). Average net earnings for 2021 were also higher than earnings for 2020 (in nominal terms by 5.1% and in real terms by 3.1%); they amounted to EUR 1,270.30.

Compared to earnings for 2020, average gross earnings for 2021 increased in both sectors: in the private sector by 6.1% and in the public sector by 6.5% (in the institutional sector general government they went up by 7.0%).

Year-on-year nominal growth of average (monthly) earnings for 2021 the highest in the last five years

An overview of data for the last five years shows that the nominal growth rates of average gross earnings (compared to the previous year) were increasing in the entire period (year-on-year growth was 2.7% in 2017 and 6.1% in 2021). In real terms, however, average gross earnings increased the most in this period (year-on-year) in 2020 (by 5.9%), as the average annual inflation rate in 2020 was lower than in 2021.
