In December 2021, more live births and fewer deaths than a year before

According to provisional data for December 2021, 8% more children were born and 29% fewer people died than a year before.

More live births than in December 2020

In December 2021, 1,542 children were born (111 or 8% more than in December 2020). Compared to the same month of the previous year, this is the highest increase in the number of births in the whole of last year. On average 50 children were born per day (46 in December 2020).

A little more than 18,700 children were born from January to December 2021. We estimate that the final number of births will exceed the number of births in 2020, when 18,767 children were born in Slovenia.

Fewer deaths than in December 2020

In December 2021, 2,287 people died. This is 951 (29%) fewer than in December 2020 and 128 (5%) fewer than in November 2021. On average 74 people died each day (104 in December 2020).

According to provisional data, 23,177 people died in 2021, which is 839 or 3% fewer than in 2020.

Excess mortality

Excess mortality (i.e. excess number of deaths compared to the average number of deaths in the same periods in the past) in December 2021 was 28%. This means that 28% more people died in December 2021 than on an average in December in the 2015–2019 period.

We estimate that compared to the 2015–2019 average, excess mortality in 2021 was 15%. The month with the highest excess mortality in 2021 was November (49%), followed by December and January (28%).

1,507 people aged 75 or more died in Slovenia in December 2021 (66% of all deaths). The number of deceased in December 2021 at that age was 27% higher than the average number of deceased of the same age in 2015–2019.

What do data for January 2022 show us?

According to the first estimate, 1,479 people died between 1 and 23 January 2022. In the same period of 2021, 2,033 people died. Provisional data for January 2022 will be published on 7 March 2022.

Data publication

In response to the increased needs of users for up-to-date data, the Statistical Office started to publish monthly data on deaths and live births by days. In the SiStat Database, the already existing tables on live births and deaths by days are being updated monthly.

Eurostat continuously publishes provisional data on the number of deaths by weeks by countries. Slovenia provides provisional data monthly.

The National Institute of Public Health is publishing daily changes in the number of deaths with COVID-19.
