More persons in employment in September, higher growth among fixed-term employees

After two consecutive monthly declines, the number of persons in employment increased in September by 0.3% to about 941,000. The largest monthly growth was recorded in education, while the overall number of persons in employment was 0.4% lower year-on-year.

Growth after the summer decline

After two consecutive monthly decreases, the number of persons in employment rose again in September, by slightly more than 2,800 or 0.3% to about 941,000. Among persons in paid employment, the number increased by just under 2,500, and among self-employed by just over 300.

On the other hand, compared to last September, the number of persons in employment decreased by 0.4%. The number of persons in paid employment was down by 0.6%, and the number of self-employed up by 1.5%.

Slightly higher growth among men than women

At the monthly level, the number of men in employment increased slightly more (by just over 1,500 or 0.3%) than the number of women (by almost 1,300 or also 0.3%).

Year-on-year, a decrease was recorded for both men (by 0.6%) and women in employment (by 0.1%).

Growth in three quarters of sections of activities, largest in education

At the monthly level, the number of persons in employment increased in 15 sections of activities, remained unchanged in mining and quarrying, and decreased in four. As it is usual for September, the largest growth was recorded in education, with the number rising to slightly more than 81,500, about 1,000 or 1.3% more than in the previous month. On the other hand, the largest decline was observed in real estate activities, by just under 100 persons or 1.8%.

Compared to the previous September, the number of persons in employment increased the most in human health and social work activities (by 3.5%) and decreased the most in manufacturing (by 1.7%).

Fewer persons in employment than in the previous quarter

Compared to the end of the second quarter of this year, the number of persons in employment decreased by 0.2% or by just under 1,900, while compared to the first quarter it increased slightly, by just over 200. In the third quarter, the number of persons in paid employment was 0.3% (or just under 2,500) lower than in the second quarter and 0.1% (or about 1,000) lower than in the first. The number of self-employed continued to grow: it was 0.6% (or slightly more than 600) higher than in the second quarter and 1.1% (or almost 1,200) higher than in the first. The highest growth in the number of self-employed persons was recorded in other social work activities without accommodation for the elderly and disabled – by slightly fewer than 200 persons or 11.2% compared with the second quarter, and by slightly more than 400 persons or 28.9% compared with the first quarter.

Higher monthly growth among fixed-term employees

By the type of employment, the number of employees with a fixed-term contract was about 1,500 higher than in August (up by 1.0%, to around 141,900). Almost two-thirds (58.1%) of this increase were employees with fixed-term contracts in education and construction. The number of employees with permanent contracts also grew, by slightly more than 800 or 0.1% to around 693,000.
