Total output of the environmental goods and services sector just over a quarter higher than a year earlier
The environmental goods and services sector employed 33,830 full-time equivalents and generated EUR 3.1 billion of total output in 2023.
The largest share of the output generated by production activities
Total output of the environmental goods and services sector amounted to EUR 3.1 billion in 2023, which is 27.0% more than a year earlier; mainly due to increased production and higher prices of energy from renewable sources.
The largest share of total output was generated by production activities (EUR 1,142.3 million or 36.6%). The output of producers specialised for environmental services that are registered in water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation amounted to EUR 374.5 million or 12.0% of total output. The share of the public sector, which contributed EUR 145.9 million to total output, was 4.8%.
The largest share of environmental goods and services value was produced in the environmental domain management of energy resources (53.7%), followed by waste management (12.8%), wastewater management (10.5%) and protection of ambient air and climate (10.1%).
Exports up at the annual level
Exports in the environmental goods and services sector amounted to EUR 937.6 million, which is 2.9% more than in the previous year; 87.1% of the value came from production activities and 12.7% from specialised environmental activities (mostly export of non-hazardous waste for additional processing or recycling).
Employment also up
In 2023, the output in this sector was generated by 33,830 full-time equivalents, which is 7.4% more than in the previous year.
