Yield forecast of late crops, late fruit and grapes, 2025

A poor harvest of most late crops is expected, a better one in orchard plantations

The yield forecast as of 5 September 2025 shows that the expected yield of most late crops will be below average, and of late fruits in orchard plantations good. The expected average yield of maize for grain is 7.9 tonnes per hectare, which is 14% less than last year.

Below average yield of maize and late potatoes is expected

The data on yield forecast as of 5 September 2025 show that the expected yield of most late crops will be below average. The expected average yield of maize for grain is 7.9 tonnes per hectare, which is 17% less than a year ago and 11% less than the ten-year average. On a slightly larger area (by 3%), 12% less maize is expected to be produced, in total 340,670 tonnes.

The weather was not kind to the silage maize either. The expected average yield should amount to 41.3 tonnes per hectare, which is a tenth less than last year and 9% less than the ten-year average.

The total output of late potatoes should weigh around 63,700 tonnes, which is 9% less compared to last year’s harvest. The expected average yield is 24.5 tonnes per hectare. 5% lower than the ten-year average.

This year’s sugar beer production is expected to be the smallest since 2019, when it was reintroduced to Slovenian fields. The area has decreased by 74% since last year, and the yield is expected to be 16% lower. Less than 2,000 tonnes of this formerly very important crop are expected to be produced on 38 hectares or 51.9 tonnes per hectare.

Rather poor harvest of most late oil plants

Total output of soya is expected to weigh 11,300 tonnes, harvested from 4,760 hectares. Average yield should amount to 2.4 tonnes per hectare, which is 15% less than last year (2.8 tonnes per hectare) and 14% less compared to the ten-year average.

Oil pumpkins are also expected to yield worse – 17% less than last year and 8% less than the ten-year average. Farmers are expected to harvest around 600 kilograms of dried pumpkin seeds per hectare. As it takes about 2.5 to 3 kilograms of dried seeds to produce one litre of pumpkin oil, this year’s yield could amount to between 200 and 240 litres of oil per hectare.

Sunflowers are expected to yield similarly to last year, at 2.1 tonnes per hectare, which is 10% below the ten-year average. If weather conditions remain favourable until harvest, around 1,100 tonnes of sunflower seeds are expected from 528 hectares.

Low output of hops

This year’s weather conditions had a negative impact on hops. From a slightly smaller area than last year (by 3%), hop producers in Slovenia are expected to harvest a tenth less hops. The expected average yield of 1.3 tonnes per hectare is about one fifth lower than the last ten-year average.

Harvest of late fruits in orchard plantations above average, but poor in extensive orchards

The harvest of apples and pears, the most important late fruit species in our country, should be abundant this year in orchard plantations.

The expected average yield of apples in orchard plantations should weigh 26.9 tonnes, which is slightly more than last year and 18% more than the ten-year average. The total output of apples is expected to be around 50,700 tonnes. A good harvest of pears is also expected in orchard plantations – on average 16.4 tonnes per hectare, or 17% more than the last ten-year average. Total pear output is expected to weigh 3,442 tonnes.

After last year’s excellent harvest, extensive orchards are expected to produce a more modest yield this year. An individual tree is expected to yield 24 kilograms of apples, 41% less than last year and a quarter less than the last ten-year average. Pears in extensive orchards are also expected to yield modestly, 27% below the ten-year average. In total, about 9,960 tonnes of apples and 2,061 tonnes of pears are expected to be gathered from extensive orchards.

Winegrowers expect a good grape harvest

Compared to last year, which was particularly unfavourable for grape production, average yields of white grapes are expected to be excellent, yet still only 3% above the ten-year average. From a hectare of vineyard, on average 6.5 tonnes of white grapes are expected to be harvested, totalling around 62,600 tonnes.

We also expect above average harvest of red grapes – 6.2 tonnes per hectare is 2% more than the last ten-year average yield. The total output of red grapes from about 4,230 hectares is expected to weigh around 26,400 tonnes.
