Forest accounts, 2024
Values of forestry output and employment slightly lower, production costs stayed approximately the same
Gross value added in forestry in 2024 was slightly lower than in 2023 reaching 0.6% of gross domestic product.
Factor income lower than the year before
The values of income categories in forestry were lower than in the previous year. Gross value added reached EUR 372 million. Its share in gross domestic product was 0.6%. Factor income amounted to EUR 278 million. The value decreased by 19% over the previous year. Factor income per employee amounted to EUR 44,936. It was influenced by the ratio between the values of forestry output (down by 8%), intermediate consumption (about the same as in 2023) and employment (down by 1%).
Forestry output value lower due to lower value of forestry goods
The value of forestry output was EUR 753 million, which was an 8% decrease over the previous year. In its value structure, forestry products accounted for 87%, and forestry services for the remaining 13%.The decline of the total forestry output was lower due to the lower value of forestry goods output (decreased due to lower values of net increment of forests available for wood supply and purchase prices of the majority of wood assortments). On the other hand, the value of forestry services increased in comparison with 2023. It reached EUR 101 million, which was a 12% increase over the previous year.
Standing timber accounted for the highest share of the value of forestry goods output
The value of forestry goods output decreased by 10% over the previous year, to EUR 652 million. In the total value, the highest share was represented by standing timber (it includes the value of wood increment of the commercial forests and the estimated value of sale of wood per stump – ie. not yet felled), followed by sawlogs. The share of the former was 50% (2 percentage points less than in the previous year), and of the latter 32% (4 percentage points more).
Lower purchase prices of sawlogs and fuelwood
The value of sawlogs and veneer logs was estimated at EUR 211 million, which was 28% of the total forestry output value. The volume of sawlogs production was slightly higher than the year before. The average sawlogs prices decreased by 7%, while the production value was higher by 3%. In the total value of forestry output, the values were lower for fuelwood (by 23%) and for pulpwood and other industrial roundwood (by 10%).
Intermediate consumption value at the same level
The value of intermediate consumption (EUR 382 million) stayed at the 2023 level. The value was higher for energy consumption (by 29%), and lower for removals (by 6%) and maintenance of material (by 13%). The value of forestry services, which are also shown on the consumption side, was higher by 12% (EUR 101 million), while other categories remained comparable to the year before last.
Gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) in forestry equipment amounted to EUR 63 million or 11% less than in the previous year.
Employment slightly lower
In 2024, 6,185 employees were involved in the forestry production, while a year earlier the number was 6,247. Most of them were self-employed (5,010 or 1% fewer). In addition to the self-employed, 1,175 paid employees were also involved in the forestry production (1% fewer than in 2023).

METHODOLOGICAL NOTE
The time series of data on the value of standing timber in the output and intermediate consumption accounts was revised for the 2012–2024 period in line with the new methodological handbook for forestry accounts. The value in the production account includes the sum of values of net increment in forests available for wood supply and the estimated value of the sale of wood on stump. In the intermediate consumption account the value includes the sum of the value of removals and the estimated value of the sale of wood on stump. Annual values are in line with the report on total gross removals in the international forestry questionnaire Joint Forest Sector Questionnaire (JFSQ).
The time series of data on the value of forestry services was aligned with the national accounts for the 2012–2024 period.
Additional explanations are available in the methodological explanations.
