Production of early crops and early fruits and yield forecast of some important late crops, 2025

A good harvest of cereals, average by turnip rape and poor by early fruit species

The harvest of all stubble cereals was good, while early fruit species (cherries, sour cherries and apricots) yielded poorly. According to the yield forecast as of 31 July 2025, below average yields of late potatoes and maize are expected.

Most stubble cereals yielded very well, turnip rape average

Wheat was grown on a similar area as last year, from which 12% more grain was harvested, in total 170,347 tonnes. Average yield of 6.2 tonnes per hectare was by 12% better than last year and by 16% better than the last ten-year average.

Barley yield, on average 5.6 tonnes per hectare, was the best in the last ten years. From a slightly smaller area than last year (by 2%), around 115,300 tonnes of barley were harvested (by 14% more).

Triticale was sown on almost 5,200 hectares, from which 27,560 tonnes of grain was harvested. Average yield of 5.3 tonnes per hectare was by 13% better than last year and by 14% better than the ten-year average.

Oil turnip rape was sown on a 16% smaller area. Compared to the previous, more favourable year, it also yielded poorly (by 19%). Nevertheless, we assess the harvest as average, since the yield per hectare was 2.6 tonnes per hectare and thus similar to average yield in the last ten years. From 2,146 hectares, about 5,600 tonnes of oil turnip rape was harvested (by 32% less).

Poor yields of maize and late potatoes expected

According to the yield forecast as of 31 July 2025, the expected yield of late potatoes is 24.1 tonnes per hectare. This is by 9% less than last year and by 7% less compared to average yield in the last ten years.

The area sown with maize for grain increased by 3% compared to last year. Total output of 340,587 tonnes of grain is expected, which is 12% less. The expected average yield of 7.9 tonnes per hectare is 14% smaller than last year and 11% smaller compared to the last ten-year average. The weather conditions similarly affected green maize for silage. From a hectare of arable land 39.6 tonnes of green maize is expected, which is by 14% less than last year, in total around 1,084,300 tonnes.

Poor harvest of soybeans and sunflowers is expected

This year was also not favourable for some oilseed crops. Soybean was sown on a 14% larger area and 4% heavier total output is expected, although yield is expected to be 9% lower. If weather conditions remain normal until harvest, 12,162 tonnes of soybeans are expected to be harvested from 4,760 hectares, on average 2.6 tonnes per hectare.

Sunflowers should yield slightly better than last year (by 3%), but still 6% worse than the ten-year average. Total output of 1,138 tonnes is expected, or 2.2 tonnes per hectare.

Poor yields of early fruit species in orchard plantations and extensive orchards

Cherries in orchard plantations yielded better than in the previous year. The average yield of 4.3 tonnes per hectare was by 23% better than previous year’s but still by 18% worse than the ten-year average. Sour cherries also yielded poorly. The average yield of 2.6 tonnes per hectare was more than half smaller than the ten-year average.

On the other hand, the average yield of apricots – 4.0 tonnes per hectare – was better compared to previous year’s really poor yield (3.2 tonnes per hectare), but still smaller than the ten-year average (6.4 tonnes per hectare). Total output of apricots from orchard plantations weighed about 380 tonnes.

The area of strawberries decreased by 2%. The average yield was 15.5 tonnes per hectare, which is similar than last year, but still 5% worse than the ten-year average.

In extensive orchards, the situation was similar to that in orchard plantations. From one cherry tree, around 11 kilograms of cherries were collected. This is by more than a third less than the ten-year average. The average yield of apricots was 8 kilograms per tree, which is by 19% less than in the previous year and by 31% less than the ten-year average. Total output of apricots from extensive orchards weighed 127 tonnes.

Peaches and nectarines from orchard plantations should yield less than in the previous year. The average yield should amount to 9.9 tonnes per hectare, which is by 11% less than the ten-year average.
