In festive December more tourist overnight stays than a year ago
In December, accommodation establishments reported just over 346,000 tourist arrivals and almost 830,000 overnight stays, both more than a year ago. While domestic tourists generated almost as many overnight stays, there were 8% more foreign.
The largest number of domestic overnight stays in Piran, of foreign in Ljubljana
Domestic tourists generated 36% of all overnight stays in December. There were almost 112,000 arrivals and almost 300,000 overnight stays, both almost as many (1% fewer) than in the same month the year before. They spent the largest number of their nights in Piran, Kranjska Gora and Podčetrtek. A quarter of all their overnights in December was generated in these three municipalities. Similarly to previous months, the largest number of overnight stays among domestic tourists, 20%, was generated by those in the age group 65+. Their average length of stay was 4.9 nights and was the longest among all age groups.
Foreign tourists generated almost 235,000 arrivals (9% more than in December 2023) and 530,000 overnight stays (8% more). They generated 64% of all tourist overnight stays and spent the largest number of their nights in Ljubljana (31%), followed by Bled and Piran. The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated in the age group 35–44 years (18% of all their overnight stays). The average length of stay for this group was 2.1 nights.
Tourists from Italy ranked first
The largest number of overnight stays among foreign tourists was generated by tourists from Italy, almost 121,000 or 23% of all foreign overnight stays. The most represented age group was 45–54 years, and the largest number of their overnight stays (a third) was generated in municipality Ljubljana. Piran and Kranjska Gora were their second and third most frequent choices.
With 79,000 overnight stays (15% of all foreign overnight stays), guests from Croatia ranked second. They spent the largest number of their nights in the capital – Ljubljana, Kranjska Gora and Brežice. The most numerous age group was 35–44 years.
They were followed by tourists from Austria, Germany, Serbia and Hungary.
Compared to December 2023, the number of overnight stays among the mentioned foreign markets increased the most for tourists from Hungary (by a quarter). On the other hand, it decreased only for tourists from Italy (by 4%).
In the first winter month, health (spa) and mountain resorts as well as the capital the most popular
In health (spa) resorts, 28% of tourist overnight stays were recorded, the most popular being municipality Brežice. They were followed by mountain resorts and municipality Ljubljana (22% each), and seaside resorts with 12% of all tourist overnight stays.
Domestic tourists generated the largest share of overnight stays in health (spa) resorts (45% of domestic overnight stays), with Podčetrtek, Brežice and Moravske Toplice being the most popular municipalities.
As in the previous December, foreign tourists most often opted for Ljubljana (31% of foreign overnight stays). The average length of their stay there was 1.9 nights. At the end of the year, the capital of Slovenia is also a popular destination for domestic tourists, as the largest number of their overnight stays there in 2024 was generated in December.
Compared to December 2023, the number of tourist overnight stays went up in all mentioned types of municipalities, the most in seaside resorts (by 10%).
Among types of accommodations, tourists most often opted for hotels
Tourists generated the largest number of overnight stays in hotels (just over 477,000 or 58% of all overnight stays), followed by private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings (20%) and camping sites (4%).
The number of overnight stays in hotels and private accommodations – rented rooms and dwellings went up by 6% and in camping sites by 4%.
Last year more tourist overnight stays than in 2023 as previously the most successful year
In 2024, almost 6.6 million tourist arrivals (6% more than a year ago) and almost 16.9 million overnight stays (5% more) were generated in Slovenia. With these numbers, 2024 was even more successful in terms of tourism than the year before.
Domestic tourists generated 4.5 million or 27% and foreign almost 12.4 million or 73% overnight stays. While domestic tourists generated 2% fewer overnight stays than the year before, foreign generated 7% more.
In 2024, the largest number of tourists came from Germany (almost 2 million or 16% of all foreign overnight stays). They were followed by tourists from Italy, Austria, Croatia and Czechia. Compared to 2023, 13% more Croatian tourists, 4% more German, Austrian and Czech tourists, and 2% more Italian tourists were recorded.
Interesting fact: during Christmas holidays the largest number of domestic arrivals recorded in Kranjska Gora
According to the experimental statistics Daily tourism flow in Slovenia, from 25 to 31 December the largest number of domestic arrivals was recorded in accommodation establishments in Kranjska Gora (13% of all their arrivals in this period). Piran and Brežice ranked second and third.
