Consumer price indices, October 2024
Consumer prices on average the same as a year ago but 0.5% lower than a month ago
Annually, consumer prices stayed on average at the same level. The monthly deflation was mainly the result of cheaper electricity and package holidays.
At the annual level prices on average the same
In October, zero annual inflation rate was recorded (in the same month last year it was 6.9%).
In one year, service prices increased on average by 3.2%, while goods prices decreased by 1.6%. Non-durable goods were cheaper by 2.6% and durable goods by 1.2%, while semi-durable goods prices went up by 2.1%.
The biggest impact on inflation, 1.3 of a percentage point, came from 8.6% lower prices in the group housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels, where electricity prices fell by 22.7%, followed by price decreases in the group transport (by 3.1%), which lowered inflation by 0.5 p.p.
On the other hand, in one year the prices of alcoholic beverages and tobacco went up by 5.0%, of recreation and culture by 3.3%, and of food and non-alcoholic beverages by 1.4%, and each contributed 0.3 p.p. to the inflation.
In October, lower electricity prices and package holidays, higher prices of clothing and footwear
By changing the method of calculating the network fee for electricity, electricity became cheaper compared to the previous month by 9.3%, which lowered inflation by 0.3 p.p. The prices of package holidays decreased by 6.4% and pushed inflation down also by 0.3 p.p. Another 0.1 p.p. each was added by lower prices of accommodation services (by 4.4%), actual rentals paid by tenants (by 2.7%), motor fuels (by 2.3%) and all other price decreases observed in October.
On the other hand, the seasonal shift with new collections in stores continued to have an impact on the prices in the group clothing and footwear. The prices of garments increased by 5.3% and of shoes and other footwear by 6.3%, which pushed the inflation rate up by 0.3 p.p. and 0.1 p.p., respectively. Prices of vegetables increased by 3.6% and added 0.1 p.p
Harmonised indices of consumer prices
Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, this October the annual growth of consumer prices was 0.0% (a year ago 6.6%). The monthly price growth stood at –0.3%.
In one year, service prices went up on average by 3.9% and goods prices down by 2.0%. Non-durable goods prices went down by 2.7% and durable goods prices by 2.1%, while semi-durable goods prices went up by 1.3%.
Annual inflation rates in September 2024 for all EU-27 Member States are available here. Measured with the harmonised index of consumer prices, in September the annual inflation rate in the EMU countries was 1.7% (a month before 2.2%). In the EU-27 Member States it was 2.1% (a month before 2.4%). The lowest annual inflation rate was recorded in Ireland (0.0%) and the highest in Romania (4.8%); in Slovenia it stood at 0.7%.
