Livestock slaughter in slaughterhouses, September 2023
Less meat gained than in the previous month
About 3,307,000 poultry, 16,000 pigs and 9,000 cattle were slaughtered in Slovenian slaughterhouses in September. In this way, about 5,900 tonnes of poultry meat, 1,300 tonnes of pig meat, and 2,600 tonnes of bovine meat was gained.
Slaughter of horses and cattle up at the monthly level
Compared to August, the slaughter of horses went up by about 53% (about 20 animals) and of cattle by about 25% (about 2,000 animals). On the other hand, the slaughter of poultry went down by about 13% (about 484,000 animals) and of pigs by about 8% (about 1,000 animals), while the slaughter of sheep was exactly the same as in the previous month.
The total amount of meat gained in slaughterhouses was lower by about 5%. The total carcass weight of slaughtered horses went up by about 47% (about 3 tonnes) and of cattle by about 21% (about 441 tonnes). On the other hand, the total carcass weight of slaughtered poultry went down by about 12% (about 830 tonnes), of pigs by about 10% (about 145 tonnes) and of sheep by about 4% (about half a tonne).

Compared to last September, the slaughter of sheep went up by about 16%, while the slaughter of cattle went down by about 24%, of pigs by about 9%, of poultry by about 5% and of horses by about 4%.
The total amount of meat gained in slaughterhouses was lower by about 12%. The total carcass weight of slaughtered cattle went down by about 21%, of pigs by about 16%, of poultry by about 6% and of horses by about 3%, while the total carcass weight of slaughtered sheep went up by about 15%.
This September, we recorded the slaughter of 11 cattle imported from Italy and Croatia. The total weight of dressed carcass was about 2 tonnes. There was no record of slaughter of imported pigs or poultry.
