In the first quarter of 2018, natural increase was negative (–1,064), while net migration was positive (1,468).
Fewer live births and fewer deaths
In the first quarter of 2018, 4,675 live births and 5,739 deaths were recorded in Slovenia. Compared to the first quarter of 2017, the number of live births was 93 lower, and the number of deaths was 465 lower. In a year the value of natural decrease changed from –2.8 per 1,000 population to –2.1 per 1,000 population.
More marriages and fewer divorces than in the same quarter of the previous year
In the first quarter of 2018, 752 couples were married and 583 couples were divorced. Compared to the first quarter of 2017, the number of marriages went up by 164 and the number of divorces went down by 72.
Increase in internal migration
In the first quarter of 2018, 27,311 people migrated internally, which is 2.9% more than in the same period of 2017.
Net migration of Slovenian citizens negative for the twenty-eighth consecutive quarter
Compared to the same period of 2017, the number of immigrants to Slovenia increased by 27% to 5,199 in the first quarter of 2018. The number of emigrants decreased by 28 persons to 3,731. The number of emigrated citizens of Slovenia (1,933) was higher than the number of emigrated foreigners (1,798).
Positive net migration was recorded for foreign nationals (2,270 persons), while 622 Slovene citizens more emigrated from Slovenia than immigrated to it.
